• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

have you read YOUR original post as it says nothing about how you wanted to use the radio.
you just say receive only.
so go to a corner and read it.

Yes! Yes I have...... Here is a clip from the original post.....

How can I program 401.000 MHz? I want it for RX only so I am not concerned with any TX

Do you not understand that RX is receive and TX is transmit?????? WOW

Hello buddy I will just point out this if that 401.000 you want to listen to is not DMR digital. So analog then buy a Motorola XTS 5000 or XTS2500 380-470 BAND SPLIT then you can listen to that frequency
No. the Sondes are not DMR nor do I need DMR. I already own the 7550e and that is why I wanted to use it. I have just found out that my Kenwood NX-3300 does indeed go there so I am using that.

I only need Analog, 401MHz, Receive (RX) and a signal strength meter.

I own a Motorola XTS500 and also an XTS2500. I don't need to use them for this project as I have a surplus of radios that I can use.

I always try to learn what I can from others with the assumption that they are responding in an attempt to be helpful! It’s not always the information I’m looking for but I value the time it took for them to formulate a response nonetheless. Nobody is trolling you, the forum isn’t your personal tech support, and reasonable suggestions have been made… You sound miserable and I’m sorry about that! Good luck with your problem! @SurgePGH

Regards,
Brian

By no means am I miserable. I'm not using this forum as my personal tech support. We are all supposed to be here with a common interest and to help each other. I asked a simple question and it has snowballed. I attempted to be as specific as possible with my original post and that has turned into a hot mess of suggestions that have zero to do with the intended use.

Can you elaborate on this? I’m interested as well. I can’t seem to find a TTGO that offers 401MHz, but I’m new to this idea. I agree that especially for RX only work, there are likely some more straightforward options than hex mods for a 7550e that OP may or may not have good luck with.

Thanks,
Brian

This was my initial wish list but I don't know enough about them.

I’m glad you’re alright man! Sometimes it just takes a few posts for everyone to get on the same page! I’m also glad that the thread wasn’t locked as you initially asked because there’s some good info here and some interesting things to explore! I know I have a few rabbit holes to go down because of this thread so thanks! In defense of others, nobody knew you were wanting to monitor balloons until post #10 and after that, posts became more focused and relevant.

Anyway, I’m gonna go learn about weather balloons and TTGOs now! What software are you using to interpret the data received by your radio? I have several Harris radios that tune 380-520MHz and one already has a DRA sound card interface attached.

Amazon has these be sure to get the 433 Mhz version. TTGO Meshtastic T-Beam V1.1 CH9102F CHIP ESP32 433/868/915/923Mhz WiFi Bluetooth ESP32 GPS NEO-6M SMA 18650 Battery Holder with OLED (433Mhz OLED)

Then the Info is found MySondy GO.

My tablet is Android basic 8 inch tablet. The app is android version only. The LORA board needs a quick programing flash which was easy to do just follow the steps in the manual on the website. There’s some youtube vids on people that have done this.

I currently provide a receive station from my house that helps me get a pretty general area of where to start looking. I then throw a yagi on my scanner and get even closer. Once I've narrowed it down I use the scanner with no antenna to zero in on it. They have TTGO devices that can translate the data burst and give you the Lat/ Lon but I haven't gotten that advanced YET. A TTGO Would be a way better and faster way to track. There is a guy on line that has one with a display built into it and will take you right to the radio sonde. Goals....

Is the whole weather balloon/ radio sonde tracking worth a seperate thread? I feel like there might be more people that could benefit from a focused thread. My feed provides info to sondehub.org and that's where I do my initial tracking.

I like informative threads! A separate thread could get more attention. The title of this thread is really specific and doesn’t really do the content justice!!!
