To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I tried to convert my radio from a w5 to a w7 control head and now I can't read the radio. I switched the control head back to the w5. The radio shows everything correct when it powers up, but I keep getting "radio failed to acknowledge error context 24, c00000386. I reinstalled the cps with no change. Any help is appreciated.

What firmware is the radio? I believe you have to or it is reccomended to firmware update when you switch heads . Keeping the head firmware close or same to the unit.

That's more of a concern when you're swapping around O series heads.

XTL's are notorious for ESD problems which take out the main board. Hopefully you had the power to the unit disconnected when you were flipping heads around.

The firmware is 20.0.1 and the cps is 20. The radio was turned off,but was connected at the back I believe.

Since firmware on W series heads can't be upgraded (easily), there's really no concern.

I'm more concerned that you were swapping heads with the power connected. I'd start checking fuses and other components on the main board.

The radio appears to work fine other than I can't read it. The cable is genuine moto. I am finding other people with the same problem without making any control head changes.

Yeah definitely have power disconnected and have the ggrounding precautions. So basically the unit isn't reading the head? Have you checked the flexs? The slightest offset in the slot can cause problems. Are the flex in good condition not torn or bent to point they are not making contact?

Just tried to read another xtl 5000 and get the same error message, so must be with the cable or maybe with the serial port card.

That's good news. Looks like the radio is sill working.

It's a W7 so there's no head to read.

Now that I think about it I think the power was disconnected when I tried to swap heads. I also just had this radio tuned. The tech had to put a tx channel in the radio to test the tx function. I currently have all my channels set to rx only. I now tried this radio on my laptop and tried to read the radio, I get the message "the current cps version cannot support this codeplug as it is not compatible with this release. please upgrade to the latest version. I am using version 20.00. I am now totally confused. I just checked all 3 radios that were tuned at this dealer and none of the radios read at all. Did they use an older software to read these and write to them?

Have you restarted the computer? Occasionally that helps if you're having read/write issues. Try another computer and see if it's your cable.

It's prob your adapter you talking about a network pcmcia adapter for latop? That's prob the problem. I was told unless it's authentic ftdi or chipset you'll have issues. I had similiar issue with a cheap usb to db9 nearly bricked a radio. Motorola reccomend for those without a com port to use the iogear db9 to usb adapter. I got one and it works great for mobiles and portables. Has legit chipset.

The question is, what cable is he using.

I don't think anybody with an xtl would but a serial cable plus an adaptor when the XTL5000 will do USB.

True. I have a oem com port cable and my alt laptop didn't have the com port. I ended up using the io gear adapter because my original laptop has had hardware malfunctions and hanged at reads. It was a quick legit solution to the com port oem cable instead of buying another oem usb. Cost wise. As for knock offs I'm not sure what effect you'd have using knock offs as I only used oem cables for portables and mobiles. If your using a knock off for mobile it may be a issue. If you buy I suggest the usb as its about same. Only reason I went com was the device I had was com port capable till it went out. Usb is better and I'd reccomend oem usb from /\/\. I've never found it sound to use knock offs with expensive equipment. I was uneasy first time with the iogear to oem com. But /\/\ says it's legit and many others done firmware and never had issues.

It appears you need the latest CPS since the radio was read with the newest CPS. for example, a radio that was programmed with CPS 16, it can't be read by a lower version. You should check your Motorola on line account and download the newest software.
