• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

No problems in the past programming a XTL 5000 until today. All of a sudden CPS Says radio failed to acknowledge, Error context 24, status c0000386. Programming cable is brand new motorola cable. I am running CPS, Astro 25 Mobile R20.01.00. I have uninstalled and reinstalled software and tried different ports. I did notice that the Control head is listed under devices as a Modem. Never noticed that before but it needed a driver installed which I did but it still can read the radio. Any Suggestions?

I ran into the same issue with Astro25 portables. I am assuming that MS removed the drivers for that software, maybe because Motorola no longer supports it? So on the most recent Windows update, I lost the ability to program Astro25 radios. I had to completely remove all of the drivers and then do a reinstall of the CPS to fix the issue. I got a warning that drivers were not signed, but I accepted the risk.

Motorola is no longer paying licensing fees to Microsoft so the drivers are no longer included in updates. Great business model, especially for people with PCs that are locked down and can't load new drivers except by IT manager.

So this must be related to the .NET security updates 6.0.5 & 5.0.17 that showed up today?

Frank C. was right in what my problem was even though I don't understand. If I'm not mistaken, the XTL5000 was plugged into com 4 on my computer. A CDM 1250 was plugged into com 6 on same computer. I have never selected "USB" as the port in the past but that seems to work now. I even unplugged the CDM1250 after reading the radio, and plugged the XTL into that com and it still did not work. Thanks for the help!

Don’t confuse physical usb ports with virtual com ports. In most cases when the driver installs, it will select its own com port regardless of what physical port the cable is plugged into. It’s important to go into your device settings and view which com is assigned to that cable.
For instance, my laptop has a total of four USB ports. However, I’m utilizing 15 com ports for all the different programming cables I have. Some are Motorola, some are Kenwood, some are Icom, etc.
