• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

My XTS 3000 battery finally died (the radio won't go past self test at power on). Not unexpected since this battery is over 10 years old!
The DOA battery is an AMSTRON 2W-MO-8229MH (Ni-Mh/7.2v/2100mAh).

I'm strongly leaning to another AMSTRON battery since the last one had good performance. The radio is for non-PS use (LMR and ham only). Any other battery vendors I should consider?

10 years for a well treated battery is not out of the question. I'm still using some batteries on my JT1000 that are nearing 20 years old.

I've had good luck with Power Products.
Honeywell used to make/sell batteries and I've still got a few of those around.

I highly recommend the 5200MAH Li-ion battery. It’s sold for $39.99 on both Amazon and eBay. The battery is a bit thicker than the OEM 4500MAH, but it lasts for many many days just on RX. Since the 3000 doesn’t have a battery gauge / can’t really fully utilize Impress technology, this battery was very well worth it for me.

It does fit a bit snug in the chargers, but it WILL fit, and will charge.

My Motorola charger can detect the battery and charge the three common chemistries.

I found an extra (much newer) battery that I had forgotten about. It charged right up and appears to be working fine, but I'll cycle it a few times anyway.

This gives me some breathing room to research newer batteries and Li-ion technology. :)

I've been updating the radio's codeplug--it's been several years and long overdue. Took me a little while to find the programming cable. I've forgotten how much I hate Motorola CPS!

Thank you, all, for your suggestions and advice.
