• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey all.
For no other reason than to experiment and play...what exactly is needed to control/connect a deskset to one of my XTL5ks?

1. What model desksets work the the XTLs?
2. Any addtional software needed?
3. Any pitfalls?

Thanks in advance. I see some desksets on the 'bay and am just wondering what I'd be getting into.

I gather you are refering to the Astro consolette. at basic, they will accomodate any of the XTLs except the high power.
Ones I have acquired from feebay were the 700/800 MHz.
Really not much more than a plastic shell, power supply, and tone board options. The radio, basically a front mount sort XTL 5000.
Get one with the clock/VU meter, that much better,
They can be installed with remote user terminals (desk set) or stand alone, desk mic etc..
Nothing special for software, XTL CPS can program them in the usual manner.

I have one with a W series head and the only way I can program it is through the rear accessory port, so I have to crack the case each time to get to the radio brick.

Being you mention deskset and xtl I am guessing you are asking if they make a deskset (remote) that can hook to your mobile radio. They do but its complicated. Normally a consolette and DJB along with a MC2000 is whats used on the XTL series.

XTL5000 consolette stations E/W the correct options interface with or more RCH3000 or MC3000 Digital Desksets via the Digital Junction Box.
Other Consolette options allow simple remote operation with tone remote type desksets such as the MC1000, MC2000, and MC2500.

However, a standalone XTL5000's E/W a W series TIB can be interconnected directly with either the RCH3000 or MC3000 Desksets per
the attached wiring diagram (PDF).
