• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I got my hands on a VHF XTS4000 recently and I am noticing some odd behavior.
First, when the Radio is powered off, the Keypad flashes, presumably until the battery is dead. Once in a while, if I get lucky, it shuts down completely. Otherwise I have to pop the battery off.
It also will re-boot on occasion, usually when I am configuring a scanlist.

Has anyone observed either of these behaviors before and know what the problem could be?

Thanks,
Mark

Most of those are ALT radios so God only knows what happened to it in the past, maybe yours isn't but worth noting.

What's the firmware in it? Is it development or legit release?

It all appeared legit to me. I stay away from anything with a 123ABC1234 S/N or any development FW. I suppose someone could have jammed a new serial number and codeplug (different from tags) along with a FW bump.

Legit 4ks are pretty rare.

I have had several 4ks over the years, most had some issue or another. There are several ribbon cables that plug in to the boards inside. You might try making sure they are all seated. I had an issue with the front display and it was a cable connector issue. Other than that I have no idea what could cause the flashing like that. That's a really strange issue.

Thanks for the info. I already dug into it once. Sounds like I may have to double check the connectors. I have generally had good luck with previous purchases. Looks like I may have inherited a lemon this time......

I bought one which turned out to have severe water damage. The seller replaced it with one that had less water damage.

As somebody has already said, legit XTS4000's are pretty rare.

Out of at least 10 XTS4000's I've serviced, only 1 was legit with tags and traceability.

Well, thanks guys for the info. I guess the next question is whether or not it would be worth the trouble of getting it looked at by someone or if that would be throwing good money after bad. Especially considering that it is probably an ALT.
