• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an XTS5000 with an O3 Handheld control mic. The user (my boss) wants to have a way to dim the lighting on the control mic as it is too bright at night.

I went into the RSS and none of the three buttons provide this as an option although it is listed as such in the Help file.

Any ideas?

You must mean an XTL500 mobile. Using CPS, program the DIM function to one of the buttons on the O3 head. Pressing the DIM function will get you bright, dim, and off, for the display.

Yes, sorry an XTL5000 (My mistake).

I tried that but that DIM function does not appear in the pick list of any of the buttons on the head.

Does this need to be enabled elsewhere first?

I dont remember doing anything special to enable mine.

Usually the help file will tell you all the steps to enable a feature.

Are you running recent firmware?

In CPS go to:

Controls/Control Head - O3
Next to the Mid button click the down arrow under Conventional. You may have to scroll to see it.

I was looking in the wrong place. I was trying to get one of the programmable soft keys to act as a dimmer, but I guess that isn't possible. I had to move the Direct key to there and I made the top side button the dimmer.

I love this radio, I wish the chief would retire so I could snap it up out of his car!

Thanks guys!

I find the display to still be too bright even on the dim setting.

I wish it had the ability to change the colour to red like the O5. Much easier on the eyes at night.

There is a colour choice in the menu options but it doesn't seem to function on the O3.

I think the HHCH mic lacks the color hardware present in the O5's. We have an O5 in the 9-1-1 Center and the dispatchers keep swapping the colors around. One likes it red for the cool factor and to match the 996XT and others like it green to match the CDM's.
