OK...I have a ft-991a. SUPPOSEDLY you can just hook up a usb to the back, after installing the appropriate driver from Yaesu on the computer, then the "usual " setup for digital modes......about that.
I bought the memory/programing software for it..works fine.
trying to get HRD, FLDIGI, and or WSJT to work has been a nightmare
Ive tried two different computers, deleted and reinstalled the drivers. No avail. no matter what I do, (tried many many suggested radio/program menu settings suggested online...same thing. It all works except the mike stays hot, or there is no signal from the computer to the radio showing on the ALC. Its a new radio, with current firmware. Anybody else have this issue? Only thing I havent done is try swap the (new) usb cable. Any suggestions?

Check this guy out on YT. He talks about settings that didn't work for him and he was able to get it to work:

Check your computer closely. A fellow local ham drove himself nuts for more than two days straight trying to get his WSJT-X working. Reinstalling drivers, changing USB cable, changing baud rates, changing software settings. Then he found this gem in a Google search. May be totally unrelated to your situation.... or maybe not -
“There's an issue with "WAV audio services" on new Dell W11 machines and WSJT-X”.
Right-click the start button and select Run. Type services.msc and Enter. In this table of services, find Waves Audio Services. Right-click (or double-click) and click on Stop. Once stopped, click on the down arrow for Startup type, and select, "Disabled", then Enter. Click on Apply at the bottom, then OK..
After rebooting, if this does not fix your problem and you wish to reverse the above action, in Startup type select, "Automatic," and click on Start, then Apply and OK.
I don't have that problem on my two-years-old Windows 11 Dell. I have seen the problem a few times but it is sporadic. Closing WSJT-X and SmartSDR and reopening them fixes it."
I did exactly that, restarted and BOOM! Fixed! This is something to remember if you come across someone with a new Dell machine like me.

Some of my settings are different from those in the video. Additionally, I need to turn my screen saver off when I operate. If I walk away and try to transmit later it does not transmit and I need to restart WSJT-X. I think it does this on my tablet as well. Anyways, these are my settings and they definitely work with two computers. Also, some USB cables are power only and do not pass data. I use this particular one as it has two ferrite beads to help thwart RFI problems. I never had problems, but no need to wait.

31: 38400bps (Settings depend on computer settings)
32: 100msec
33: Enable

62: Others
64: 1500Hz
65: 1500Hz
66: Off
68: Off

70: Rear
71: RTS
72: USB

Filter settings
Notch: Off
Cont: Off
DNR: Off
DNF: Off
Shift: 0
Width: 3000

My "DT GAIN" is often at 2 and I may need to shift up to 5 depending on the band. Even when on the same band I will still double check it and it may need to shift from up/down one setting to keep the ALC happy and actually get some watts pushing.

*** Additionally, ensure under mode it is set to DATA-USB. In the top left corner I see:
1. VFO-A
2. D-U
3. DT-G

When I am not in data mode it says USB in the top left, or whatever mode I'm using instead of D-U. *** Remember that the 991A will rotate between three settings when selecting a band depending on what you have setup for that band. For example, if I keep pressing the "Band" button and then "50" on the screen it rotates from the digital setting (D-U) DT-G, to AM, and then to USB. This is what "I" see based on my usage.

For RF PWR I have never set it above 20W and I typically use it at 10W and 5W. Depending on my ALC setting, the actual watts may be less. Also, if your ALC is in the red during TX, you need to turn it down.

Once you get it working, I recommend you install NetTime if you are using Windows.

And finally, because this too is important, here are my radio settings for WSJT-X. Your COM port may be different.
