What do you guys think about this model?

I plan on getting my technicians license this month and researching radios.

Thanks

It's a great rig. I've owned one for about two and a half years and I've never had a problem with it. I use it mobile so the large display, backlit keys, and the large VFO knob help make it easier to use when mobile.

I just bought one 2 weeks ago from Texas Towers in Plano. Seems like a decent radio. I've got it at the house as a base station right now. This is the first Yaesu I've owned. The programming is way different than Icom. A good radio for the price. RX audio is pretty good. Get great reports on TX audio. I just wish someone made a straight USB programming cable other than what I've found available which is serial that needs a converter to use USB.

I got one about 3 weeks ago and I love it. I use a motorola speaker with mine and the audio is loud and crisp. I also built my own separation kit for about $8. The kit they sell is a rip off.

I also think they are great. I have had mine in my truck with a Motorola speaker for about 6 months now with no problems. It replaced an IC-2720H which was a piece of S#!T.

I heard someone that owned ICOMS and had a horrible time trying to program this thing, was it the same for you?

Also I already own a serial to USB cable so that should be no problem for me.

Thanks for all the responses guys, keep em coming!

Not "horrible" no better/worse. Different. Read the manual if you get one. Of course thats a given.

Finally had some time to spend with mine last night into the morning hours. After I got into the manual, and started programming the thing, I think it's easier for me than the Icoms now. Who needs that stinkin software and cable anyway now! Yeah I guess it could be done a little quicker with computer, but not much more for me. I don't think I'll waste my money on the cable now. The more I play with this radio, the more I like it!

I own two Yaesu 7800's and I'm working on owning a couple more. I use one for a base unit and one for a mobile. I've had nothing but good results out of them. I think they are very user friendly and the backlit keys are a big reason why I like the 7800 for mobile use.

I highly recommend this radio. It's the best all around dual band radio I could find for price, features, etc.

I agree. It is a fantastic radio. TX audio is superb! It is probably the best deal on a dual band mobile out there. Vertex/Yaesu continues to make outstanding radios and they don't burn a hole in your wallet. Get the 7800 you will not be disappointed!

I just bought my FT-7800R from dayton and and good reports so far on tx and rx. Audio is great on both rx and tx. Best yaesu I have owned yet. Also easy to program. Very nice on how all the front buttons all light up to see very well at night. So far would give the radio 5/5.

So you are trying to say this is a "girly" radio???

:)

I think what he's saying is that the ladies like it.

A: If you have it.
B: If the ladies like it.
Conclusion: You will benefit from having a Yaesu 7800-R.

I'm getting one next week. I decided that after reading a lot of reviews on different radios and it had the most good reviews, and only two bad reviews, the bad reviews were from people who didn't like things like mic cord location, which can be "fixed" with a bit of common sense.

Just installed a Comet SBB-5 NMO antenna on the 4-Runner for mine, and it works really, really well for mobile operation with the 7800. Great looking antenna too.

I also like the Yaesu's for VHF/UHF; however, unless budget considerations apply, you might want to at least consider a real "dual band" radio like the FT-8800. I have lived in many places where listening to both VHF and UHF simultaneously was advantageous. Also it can be configured to do VHF/VHF or UHF/UHF in case you want to monitor two frequencies on the same band; an example would be while traveling, monitoring the 156.52 and the nearest 2m repeater at the same time. Just food for thought.

As for reliability, I still own an FT-8100 and FT-8500 and they are both great radios and have not given me any trouble over the years. The 8500 is good radio but a bad idea, it was the one with the "Mr Potato Head" mike; what a pain when mobile but makes a pretty good base radio.

The 7800 has that cheap, clunky look and feel that a lot of yaesu radios do (like the 897D, UGH). I wish the vol and sql knobs had mechanical detents. Very decent radio for the price though.

I did not buy mine for a scanner though. That would be stupid to buy it just to scan. I bought mine to talk on.

It will rx on quite a bit more than tx though. That's nice.

To just have it do blind scans seems kinda stupid to me though.

I use the memory scan with a variety of 2m/1.25cm/73cm freqs, several hundred that I programmed in. That makes more sense for this type of radio for me for now.

There's a lot that this radio will do that I have not even tapped it's capabilities yet.

The 7800 will stay in the vehicle since I got the IC7000. The 7000 is the radio to have.

If the 7800 gets stolen from the vehicle it won't be a great loss. Maybe even replace it with something cheaper yet like an Alinco.

But if I wanted a scanner (which I don't) I would buy a scanner

Interesting comment, what has that to do with this thread?
This thread is about what radio he wants to buy after he gets his tech license, you are the only one to suggest anything at all to do with scanners.

Another example of blind posting without reading, and that is after posting in this thread 4 times before that nonsense.
