• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Thanks. Would you consider then, the Wouxun brand to probably be the best overall quality choices available?
I have a Wouxun KG-935G GMRS HT and I love it. Our repeater is approximately 13 miles away and I hit it sitting at my ham shack with no problem. I found an old Rat Shack gmrs HT that I gave to my grandson, and I have no problem talking simplex to him on any of the simplex frequencies. Plus it has great audio! You can't go wrong with Wouxun.

Absolutey not.

Wouxun and Quality are not two words I'd use in the same sentence.

Wouxun are low end, bottom of the barrel Chinese radios. In fact, you cannot do much worse. They are "radio on a chip" and have poor filtering and very poor quality control. Yes, they'll work in some applications, but you can -easily- do better. If you are looking for the cheap solution to get on the air easily and with the least amount of cash, then they may be a good solution. Other than that, there are absolutely better options.

Give us an idea of exactly what you are looking for, and we can make some recommendations.

Wouxun is just a higher priced Baofeng. Built same way. Ham radio with modified software for GMRS only. As MTS said Kenwood makes a good little radio. Guess it really dependso n your "need" of a gmrs handheld

Wouxun KG-935G, GMRS Handy-Talky, FCC Type 95E accepted for GMRS only. Published in the Operations manual and also in the type 15 acceptance tests.
Couldn't readily find it for the Kenwood...

Thanks AB4BF. Good info. Would there be much performance difference in the SOC 935G and the Superheterodyne UV9G in your opinion?
I don't know exactly, and I'm not sure about the superhet being in the UV9G, but the sensitivity is excellent on my KG-935G. Its currently 149.95 at buy two way radios dot com.

Superhet receivers are a different league from from the CCR method of handling receive. I have both types on DMR, and the superhet audio is far superior in quality and clarity than the cheaper radios.

Buy Two Way Radios offers a Wouxun model that is a superhet design but still, Wouxun is still a low cost product that can't stand against the stuff Kenwood was manufacturing for LMR purposes.

I’m just looking for a GMRS radio for casual conversations and scanning of weather stations and other municipal and state channels. Not really interested in ham or serious usage.

Am I confused GMRS=UHF. WEATHER=VHF
not the same bands.

Many GMRS radios will receive VHF and UHF; they are just locked to transmit on the GMRS frequencies. Several have the NOAA frequencies pre-programmed and may even do weather alerts. A lot of them are marketed as "scanners" although I'm sure a real scanner is a better alternative. I have to chuckle at some of the marketing, where you get "for free (a $50 value)" 900 "emergency services" frequencies so you're ready just in case. Of course these are all analog-only radios, so the chances of the local emergency services frequencies being in the list are slim (and getting slimmer) and even if they ARE, you've got 890 other channels to scan!

Personally I find it a bit of a stretch to call Wouxon radios "CCRs". Yes, they are made in China, although many are superheterodyne, not SOC like a Baofeng. But I also don't consider $100 - $250 "cheap". Maybe they are ECRs? :)

I have no idea how good the filtering is on their superhet radios; it may be poor or non-existent. But they aren't SOC.

The Kenwood is a superior radio and you can probably find one close to the $149 that you can buy the KG-935G at. That being said, then you have to either get someone to program it or invest in whatever is needed to program it yourself. And, as noted above, it will not receive weather channels as they are on the VHF band and the GMRS channels are on the UHF band. If you're looking for more of a turnkey solution, I'd recommend the Wouxon even if the quality of the radio isn't as good as the Kenwood.

I was given a Kenwood TK-350C in near mint condition. The battery is dated 1997, so it's an older radio. I would need to purchase a battery and charger. Don't know if it's Part 95 accepted. Any thoughts regarding this particular radio for GMRS use?
