To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,

I recently acquired my department's old Zetron Model 25 tone encoder. I was wondering if anyone has experience in programming these units? I was hoping to reprogram it with updated tone information and place it back into service. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

What are you looking to understand?

First, doing it through a computer is the easiest. Be advised the cable is not a standard RS232 - it's proprietary so you will need to make your own or order the official one. Their software is 16 bit, so only works on DOS and some 32-bit Windows variants, but PuTTy will handle it just fine.

Second, what tones are you looking to do? Custom Calls is the easiest way to configure your tones if you are doing two tone, just more time consuming. I find most folks do that because very rarely does an agency follow tone specifications in terms of using a tone table, diagonal tones, etc.

DTMF, 5-tone and some of the other methods should be more straight forward.

I want to understand as much as possible. I really just need to add a couple of DTMF sequences and update a few obsolete tone sets. I just want to make the unit functional again so we have the ability to activate our department and immediate neighbors.

This is the best publicly available manual I could find (someone might find one better):

Again, get the cable from Zetron unless you want to build it yourself (like $30-40 from them direct). Guide to build the cable here:

When you open PuTTy press SHIFT + P (uppercase "p") to start programming mode (make sure enable switch is "on" on the back of the unit).

There are a couple different models, like ones with display, one with quick keys only, etc. You can also buy expansion consoles. Basically you assign the quick keys (which can be buttons or just shortcut codes that are four-digit numbers starting with "0").

If you want, you can just do DTMF direct entry by assigned DTMF to a format number (for example, 3) then entering format number + DMTF code and hitting send. So an example would be (if you assigned 3 to be the DTMF format) to 3 + 1234 + Send, do send "1234" as DTMF.

Feel free to hit here with specific questions (just because I like other to be able to search and learn from the posts of others).
