Does anyone know how long ZNY Lancaster Sector has been on 128.0 VHF? I was in Harrisburg, PA for work the other day and heard Harrisburg Approach handing planes over to Sector with this freq. for contact.

Another monitor checked in after I made this report elsewhere and specifically monitored the published ZNY Lancaster Sector freq with no traffic noted after lengthy monitoring.

Anyone know if this is a permanent change or temporary? Has it been this way for a long time? I don't usually monitor that sector.

I have heard Harrisburg hand off planes to ZNY on several different frequencies. The normal one is 132.2, but I have also heard the 128.0 and there were others. I will have to take note of them and see what sector they are. I didn't realize that ZNY has so many different frequencies that one airport would use for handoffs.

Depending on where a plane is going once it leaves Harrisburg International Airport airspace, it will likely end up moving into airspace controlled by the New York ARTCC (ZNY or New York Center). ZNY's airspace is broken up into sectors to more effectively manage the aircraft moving through the area. Each sector has it's own VHF and UHF frequencies for aircraft to contact the Center controller for clearance and/or instructions when moving through the sector area.

I thought RR had a link somewhere to a document showing a map of this high and low sectors. I have a copy of the document saved on my computer at home.

Well, it's now a couple of days later and the 133.675 freq listed for the Lancaster Sector is still dead and the 128.0 frequency traffic all looks like it's in that Sector. I have made the change on my freq lists.

Here is the Letter To Airman published by New York Center with their freq lists and maps if you find it useful. However, it of course still shows 133.675 for Lancaster but the rest of the info may be helpful to some.

Thanks for the info everyone. I guess it doesn't really matter much as far as monitoring ZNY because I can't seem to pick up the center's transmissions on any of the frequencies once the aircraft are handed off from Harrisburg anyway. I must be to far away from the transmitters.

Hearing the aircraft has nothing to do with how far away from the ground transmitters you are, it all has to do with how far you are from the aircraft. How many miles are you from Harrisburg Intl?

From Mechanicsburg PA, you should be able to at least hear the aircraft across most of the New York and Washington Center airspace - and partly into Boston Center's. You're also in a great position to hear a lot of MilAir activity from the PA-ANG units at Willow Grove and Harrisburg along with the NJ/MD/DC-ANG units. You've also got the Bollen Range at the Kiowa MOA in your area that's often active. Add in all the military traffic flying through that area on the ARTCC freqs and you should have constant traffic to listen to. If it's just civilian aircraft you're interested in, you should still hear all the Philadelphia/Baltimore/DC and New York/Newark traffic along with your area. You're in a great location for aircraft listening. Even with nothing but the back-of-the-radio whip, you should be hearing aircraft out the best part of 100 miles or so. Add an outdoor antenna and almost double that distance.

Thanks Tinear, I do hear the aircraft, I just wish I could pick up the centers transmissions. I guess the only way to do that will be to add an outdoor antenna. Thanks again.

You know, I just realized that I miss-read your post senduhelp. I thought you were talking about not being able to hear the aircraft. My apologies.

LRP26 has been using 28.0 since about the end of June. As listed in the LTA document the old main use to be 33.67 then for a year and a half a swap between 33.17 and 33.67 would happen every few weeks while the AF guys worked out transmitter issues. Finall last summer they cut in a new frequency, that being 128.0. Granted just recently I think the AF went back to the old back up 33.17. They can't make up their mind.
