Putting a VHF antenna on the belly of a aircraft with a big ground plane around it makes a big improvement. Flying up that high makes it possible to talk several hundred miles with only a few watts. Altitude and a good antenna are amazing things.
A few years ago now, I had an Icom IC2A that I carried around in my bag. With nothing to do, I connected it to a spare VHF Com antenna mounted on the belly of the aircraft. At 14,000ft, a couple of watts into a wrong-frequency antenna, I talked into the Auckland repeater from between Dunedin and Christchurch - say 1300km/780miles!
