I've been watching the 10m beacons for the last few days. I've been hearing lots of strong ones from the US. Since 10m has been so good lately, I screwed the 10 meter resonator on the Hustler mast on my Jeep yesterday. I was hearing beacons from Florida to California coming it at 20dB over. (These are all in the 5 - 10W power range).
Out of interest, I looked up the info on the IZ8RVA beacon out of Italy.. It's running at 6 Watts. Nice catch.
Haven't tuned up that high in years.... aside from maybe twice in the past six months. Second time I got a partial CW ID on a beacon, but nothing else.
Earlier this evening / late afternoon 12 and 11 were active. Heard a VK2 and a VK3 on 12 meters SSB. Some JA's working a DX pileup on 12, too.
Last evening (10/13/22) I must if heard at least 20 JA (Japan) stations on 10 meters from my location on the east coast. It was a zoo trying to get through the pile ups. I managed to snag two of them. 10 meters is alive and well !
They were pounding in today again. There were so many, I had to set my CW filter to narrow in order to separate some of them. Best DX today was PY4MAB near Sao Paulo Brazil. 5872.2 miles on 10Watts
Silly as it may sound, it’s led me to countless good contacts on 10m from my base station…
I keep 27.025 programmed in the handheld scanner that I monitor when I’m on my days off. I know that conditions are great when that little antenna picks up some of the “heavy hitters” on that channel!
Interesting.. One thing I've noticed, (quite often) is that 11 Meters can be open with DX, but at the same time 10 Meters is dead and I'm unable to hear any of the CW beacons. Perhaps it's just a maximum usable frequency thing where the MUF hasn't quite reached 28 MHz.
One way to tell for sure if 10M is open is to tune in to 28.074 USB. You'll hear the constant squealing of FT8 signals. But even then, when FT8 is alive, the CW and SSB bands can be devoid of activity. Even calling CQ doesn't help.
Just logged:
DB0TEN, 28.244 MHz, 1250 UTC
OE3XAC, 28.186, 1253 - This beacon ID's using two different code speeds, what a great idea.
10m certainly is becoming fun again. I wonder if anyone still uses their Ten-Ten numbers? Got mine in the 70's but it's long forgotten. There used to be a list of all the Ten-Ten numbers that you could look up.
My 10-10 number is 47495 I got it back in the early 80's.
My membership is expired, but I'll probably be joining up again with 10 looking so good.. (By coincidence, I just heard a10-10 net on 28.380 the other day)..
At one time you could look up a 10-10 number by call, (or vice versa) on their web page.. But they recently removed the function for security reasons. They have a Windows program that you can download that apparently lets you do the same thing.. Member Lookup Utility
EDIT .. Darn... Just saw that it only works for paid up members.. Maybe you could get one to look up your number for you.
