165.2600 Pl167.9

I found this while scanning (165.2600 Mhz PL 167.9) and the guy said Hungry Horse Fire (Direct). I assume it's Forest Service. The frequency might be 165.2625 if it's 12.5 khz step, found it at 5 khz step. Scanning it now to find out. That frequency is listed as DEA so checking to confirm it. Heard it before and they finally said who they were. I live in libby, mt and the signal is fairly good.

All the DEA frequencies in my parts are UHF and with a tone of 156.7, whereas the FBI here I know use the PL you have listed. I think those tones are pretty common to each agency across the country, though they're not set in stone.

Out here near the Water [New England] it's used by the USCG.

Out your way, it's likely US Forest Service, could it have been an image of another frequency?

How close are you to "Washburn" or "Tin Can" these are two USFS Rptrs using 167.9 Hz in Montana
on 164.8250 Mhz


Yes 167.9 Hz is typically an FBI tone, but also used by other agencies such as
BLM, CAP, CBP, NFS, USCG Aux, USFS, VA Hosp, USNF etc

I live in the kootenai national forest and those are in the gallatin national forest, a long ways off, heh heh. About a good 350 to 400 miles away. And yes, it could be an image freq. Still checking it out.

Are there Multiple Repeaters with Different Tones ? or maybe a Simplex Tone?

Yes, many repeaters w/ input on 165.2625 but all separate tones. All output on 164.375 w/ 123.0 PL. This way, the rangers can access specific repeaters on different mountains.
