There was a trooper and a trainee; according to police on the scene they were stopped on the right shoulder when another car came along and clipped the front of the CVPI at full speed. The front end of the police car was ripped off, the trainee was lightly injured, the trainer trooper was seriously entrapped but was freed with leg and neck injuries and was medevaced to Shock Trauma.

It was later revealed the operator of the striking vehicle has a medical emergency when he struck the officers.

I had real good video of the scene. I arrived before the first rescue units. I'm annoyed my station (WUSA) didn't put it on the web.

were u in a helo? or just right place/right time?

for the record...there's nothing funny about this incident. it's really a tragedy for the officers involved, it's safe to say that a full recovery is unlikely to result due to the severity of injuries.

[i know because i've been medevac'd before]

I commute in from Frederick Co and was up around Father Hurley headed southbound when the call came out.

I concur there was nothing amusing about the event (did I come across as otherwise?) though I will say the officer in question was fortunately priority 2 with no actual broken bones (as far as I know.)

MSP is very protective of it's own (which is reasonable) and will fly an injured officer at the drop of a hat. I say this without the intent of criticism, but rather personal experience that the fact he was medevaced may not indicate severity as much as it might a civillian.

no, you didn't come across in the wrong manner.

i was posting so that there could be NO MISTAKE as to what i personally though.

that's immediately what i thought about the report when i heard it..."medevac'd with non life-threatening injuries" makes that pretty clear.

i am ok with that practice, it's a thankless job they do...so i think a helo flight is ok...even if it is $15,000 a pop.

I'm sure they would have medevaced a civillian under the same circumstances; 'trauma due to mechanism' is how it's usually called. But there was a certain urgency (direct to land & rolling stop) in the flight that one usually doesn't see in a trooper landing.

As far as cost? Choppers are paid for, staff is on duty, really right now you're just paying for Jet-A, and add another hour to the flight log.

Once years ago when I was teching for WJZ there was a real nasty accident on EB I70 prior to 695. It happened during the rush and we were overhead fairly quickly. Roy alerted Trooper 3 which was heading back to Frederick from Shock Trauma and it was a real hoot to watch them just head right on in and land before any other first responders arrived (the ax had closed the roadway.)

First fire truck was perplexed on arrival...

as far as radio traffic goes...dispatch channels don't usually give too much in the way of actual description.

i'd bet that all the aircrew knew was that it was a PIC involving two of their own...maybe so far as priority 2 status. too much info on the radio raises the chance that the info will be inaccurate. pri2 just means "hey it's cool, not a 4 and not a 1, but hurry on up"

the landing is just a style thing. put on a good show when u get a good place to do it "paved interstate." not really gonna save too much time in either direction.
