I thought I had some prep, drilling, install photos but this was all I had. These are the before pics.....I did have to brace between the roof and the sub roof without drilling holes. I had to cut a notch in sub roof for the coax. Also I had to brace the plate between the two roofs with some aluminum blocks. It may be too sturdy. It has no flex at the base. Other than that it took me way too long to put my trim and headliner back together. I don't recommend removing trim from this model truck unless you have the time.

You need a good daylight pic of the vehicle showing the full length of the antenna. They are big suckers and work better than any VHF mobile antenna except maybe the big Hustler collinear of similar length.

Well I finally got it finished. My project was delayed due to extensive amount of hours at work and weekends. The only thing I don't like about the antennas is that you put it together, seat everything to the bottom and tighten it up. The set screws are cheap. The antenna itself is not tunable. It need to allow some room to make adjustments.

The reason I say this because it tunes out perfectly at 148.300 Mhz. x=0, swr=1.0, 99% match, 52 Ohms. It holds good readings from 145 Mhz-149 Mhz. Swr from 1.0-1.7....The antenna needs to be a little longer to get the center frequency down. So I may substitute some longer sections to achieve this.

I'm not sure what the length of my LMR 400 coax is but I ran it the shortest distance possible. It may be about 10 ft guessing at it. I reinforced the roof with some 3/8'' thick plate on the bottom side of my roof hidden above my headliner. I have took pics along the way and lost some of them. It was dark also when I got finished.

Now I am waiting on my Yaesu FT-8500fs10 to get here tomorrow so I can get use to the programming. I hope the FT-8500 is a good choice for a radio once I get use to it. Sorry for the terrible pics.........

yea, I wished I had gotten several more pics and I could not find some of them. The roof has no flex even when I grab it and try bend it at any angle. I will take 2 daylight pics up close and away so you can see the whole antenna. I'll also measure the total height from ground to the tip of antenna. I will include pics of the analyzer on the frequency it tunes out the best at.

I have another one of these antennas. I want to dissect one of them and see whats going on inside. Then I can construct one a lot larger.

I hope you do not 'low bridge' that antenna.

BTW the Comtelco A1801AH30 with the WPL125 52" whip, works very well on CB.

This is not a CB antenna. Its a 5/8 wave collinear 2 meter ( 144 Mhz ) antenna. While it may be overkill it just makes me feel better to have a decent antenna and it at the highest I can get it on my vehicle. Not to worry about hitting bridges. I don't travel often in this gas guzzler.

The antenna looked good on the analyzer. It has changed a bit since I have ran it. I need to make a longer stinger to see if that will get the frequency down some. Then I may have to make a longer bottom shaft. If these don't work I may have to look at the coil and see whats going on. Then I can make it tune where I want it.

It's roughly 14.5 foot from the ground to the tip of antenna.

Here are some daytime pics........NOTE: I am no photographer and I did have the phone upside down and sideways so If the pics load that way then blame it on me. Just stand on your head or tile your head to the side....lol.....oh,.....and it was shady on that side of the house also. Pics are a little dark

I forget where mine has the best match but it does cover more than the 2m amateur band with a very good match. You should be able to loosen the set screws and pull the top and bottom whips out of the center coil plus the bottom whip out of the bottom coil a little to lower the center freq.

Yes it is a little high. There is no room to extend the top/bottom element. I adjusted at the base, the bottom of coil, the top of coil and could extend each one maybe a 1/16''. I think overall I could get it almost 5/16'' longer then I was getting above the set screws so I had to back it down. It is borderline now and I actually need to seat them to the bottom for now until I can tune on it some more.

Since there is no room for adjustment I can try and run a longer top stinger/ bottom stinger or both. I'll get it figured out. I can assemble the other antenna I bought and see if there is a difference. It may just be on center frequency. I would like to get it about 145 Mhz. I know someone that has a 12v 200w repeater amplifier. I may just put it in there too.

So far I got......

Antenna.................$25.00
Breedlove mount.....$9.00
Nmo/pl259 adapt....$10.00
lmr 400 coax.............$5.00 ( 10 ft.)
radio.......................$220.00
time/install/test/tune......10 hrs because I had to destroy my truck to get the headliner out. Had to start with taking back seat out first...ha ha! No help and only me.

Kind of an over kill for a two meter antenna. As most bridges are only clearance for 13 ft 6 inches to 14 feet, I would expect that antenna to hit everything going down the road. First bridge it comes to will put a right angle bend in the top part of the whip. Then you have all the tree branches that hang over most streets and roads.

Nice antenna for parking, but on the road not very practical.

Having been a ham for some 50 plus years now and drove over a good part of the country, I find that a simple 1/4 wave whip has provided more than enough antenna. I run an old Motorola Spectra radio with about 75 watts out. By the time I can't hear the repeater, they can't hear me any more.

You have to understand that most repeaters around the country are way unbalanced. They talk out more than they can hear. So it's not uncommon to not be heard even running some power in the car or truck. I use to run a base loaded 5/8 whip on the truck. Found out the whip got bent up more than it was worth taking the time to keep taking the bends out. The longer antenna does give you a little more distance, but the draw backs just don't make it worth while.
