That was a Amazing opening on Sunday afternoon.
For me, it started when my 2 meter rig on 146.52
rig came alive with a station in Brookville, Fl booming through at
my Qth in south central Pennsylvania. After the QSO was completed,
I heard no further stations on 52 FM.
Switched to SSB and was able work 6 stations in
Florida and single stations in Sc, Ms, Al, Tx, and Ar.
I’ve been hamming for many years (66) and that sure
was the best opening I’ve worked over the years on
two meters. In 1998 I worked a station in Wy on 144 SSB
and I never forgot that one. I keep the QSL on the wall
of my shack.
The skip here lasted a little over an hour and during
that time I used my R8600 and tuned across the FM
broadcast band and the band was completely jammed
up with stations in the gulf coast area. There were lots
of Spanish stations booming in but was unable to ID
them.
I’m sure there were many long haul QSO’s completed
and it’s one of those exciting adventures that can make
ham radio fun… 73
