Group,

Back in 1998 there was a major ice storm in North Dakota and it took down a 2,000 ft tower somwhere around the Grand Forks or Fargo area.

Does anyone know what town this was and know anything about the tower what it was used for and such?

Also does anyone know if this tower was every replaced with a new one?

Are there any other towers in the world that are this tall? I had heard this was the tallest in the world at that time.

Thanks

Doug

the worlds tallest tower/man made structure is the kvly tv-11 tower located near Blancherd ND. i believe its 2500 ft tall, go to www.kvlytv11.com and there is a link there about the tower with some intresting facts, by the way that tower did not come down during the storm, it was the channel 4 twr which i believe it was north of grand forks but wasn't quiet that tall.

There was a very tall antenna tower for a TV Station in Omaha that collapsed around a year ago. I can remember seeing the damage it did to a truck when it came down. I would not have wanted to be close to it when the guy wires started to snap.

So that 2000ft tower in eastern North Dakota did not collapse under the weight of that 6 inches of ice from the ice storm? Must have been a rumor I heard then. Oh well.

Thanks for the info.

tower

no there was a another tall tower for i think kxjb ch.4 (cbs) that did go down in the '97 ice storm, i dont' think it was 2000ft tall, but it was taller than your average tower. of course why the tv towers around here have to be so tall is because of geography, we are in a valley here, and they have to be taller than average to broadcast any considerable distance beyond the red river valley.

The KXJB mast has gone down twice, first in the 1960s when it was hit by a USMC chopper, and again in 1997 when the ice took it down. It is the world's second tallest tower.

The KVLY mast, a few miles to the northeast, is three feet taller and is the world's tallest tower (2063 feet). I have not been to the KXJB tower, but have been to the KVLY tower. You can drive right up to the base of the thing, and it is an amazing site, especially at night. The tower is so high that when standing at the base and looking up, it gives the appearance of leaning overhead. It is certainly worth a visit for anyone traveling through the area. I recommend seeing it at night.

You can find them both on Google Earth.

KVLY 47°20′32″N 97°17′20″W
KXJB 47°16′45″N 97°20′27″W

you can see the kvly tower from interstate 29 at night from 15 miles away ( i think) and it still towers over all other towers. it's easy to find, its' the one with the most warning lights on it.

I'd hate to be the guy that would have to go up there to change the bulbs on the obstruction lights...

When I was standing at the base of that thing I was thinking to myself that there is no way that I would ever care to go up on that tower during the day, but I bet it would be interesting to ride the elevator to the top on a very dark night with a clear sky.
