the worlds tallest tower/man made structure is the kvly tv-11 tower located near Blancherd ND. i believe its 2500 ft tall, go to www.kvlytv11.com and there is a link there about the tower with some intresting facts, by the way that tower did not come down during the storm, it was the channel 4 twr which i believe it was north of grand forks but wasn't quiet that tall.

It is not the tallest tower/manmade structure.

The petronius platform is higher, although much is submerged. The dubia will be taller
when completed this year. (It may already be there)

And it is only about 2063 feet high.

petronius is 610 meters (2,001 feet) high, arguably the tallest free-standing structure in the world, although this claim is controversial since only 75 meters of the platform are above water.(this comes from wikipedia) That Makes KVLY still taller by 62 ft. couldn't find anything on dubia. and as far as the exact height, i pulled that one out of my ass, couldn't remember the exact height, but i knew it was tover 2000ft.

ok here's some more by wikipedia, "Currently, the tallest standing structure is the KVLY-TV mast near Fargo, North Dakota, at 629 m (2,063 ft). It is a transmission antenna, consisting of a bare metal structure supported by guy-wires. The Warsaw radio mast at Gąbin-Konstantynów near Warsaw, Poland at 645 m (2,115 ft) was taller, but it collapsed on 8 August 1991.

The Petronius Platform stands 610 m (2,001 ft) tall, leading some to claim it is the tallest freestanding structure in the world. However, as this oil and natural gas platform is partially supported by buoyancy, critics argue that it is not freestanding, and the below-water height should not be counted, in the same manner as the underground 'height' of buildings is not taken into account.

The tallest uncompleted building in the world is the Burj Dubai tower, which as of January 20, 2007 has surpassed 106 floors high during its construction. By 2008, it will break all previous records in all categories for any building or structure ever built."
I dont' know about you, but kvly is still taller than petronius, and untill the burj dubai is complete, the kvly tower is still the worlds tallest structure. And being a north dakotan, i'm proud of that, and if you were, you would be too.

The platform height is 2001 feet. The derrick and module brings it over 80 feet higher,
much the same way that the antenna of the TV station brings the total height of the
TV tower to the 2063 feet.

But it can be any height you want, so you can lay claim for the great state of North
Dakota.

I'd hate to be the guy that would have to go up there to change the bulbs on the obstruction lights...

I would actually PAY THEM to do that job:) ( just so long as there was no ice storm or high winds)

I was more thinking about how FAR you'd be able to hear (hey, I can pick up the North Pole from here!)

I don't particularly like heights, but I can't help but wonder what it would be like to be strapped in (VERY securely!) and see what kind of range I could get with an h-t on any of the services (MURS / FRS / GMRS / Amateur).

To Dave from DPD Productions: ditto, but this would be in my mobile home park.
The park manager would probably freak to say the least, not to mention the FAA.

Here is a VHF line of sight calculator, but I do not think it means much. It is not unusual to hit repeaters that are twice as far as the "line of sight."

Many years ago I took a friend up in my Cessna with his fire department hand-held. At 2000 feet over Makoti ND (about 40 miles southwest of Minot) he was able to get into the State Radio tower just west of Jamestown. Therefore if you were on top of the KVLY tower and it was not transmitting, I suspect that you could probably hear signals from quite a bit of eastern ND and northwestern MN. With some good tropospheric ducting you could probably hear stations many hundreds of miles away.
