Your steps sound correct to me. I noticed I needed to have the SQ adjusted to where it just broke open then turn it back just a little for the weaker signals. I also did not use all the channels listed for what I was listening to, just the main control channels.

I still haven't gotten it working. I'm gonna go to Radio Shack and see if they have any advice, but I doubt they'll know what to do.

When you press hold do you hear the control channel "buzz saw" sounding noise?

The 1st thing is you only need the control channel 858.7625 not the rest, you have bought a trunking scanner and it knows what to, after you have enterd the dec codes, have you put the scanner in the trunking mode and I also so push the data button so that it will display the dec codes in the sub bank of the bank that you have the control channel in you must have the dec sub banks turned on or it will not pick up anything.

do you use scancat lite to program your 2051, if you do i can send you in a file in scancat fromat that will work for you so let me i could do it this weekend, you will need the gray cable from radio shack and the scancat lite program i dont work for radio shack or scancat i just know that programing the 2051 can be a pain. and can be made more simple you have spent good money so spend a little more, time is money the cable will be $24.95 and scancat lite will be 29.95 and i belive that you will find that it is money well spent, scancat lite has a free demo of its program that they will let you mess around with.

What do you mean by dec codes and turning the dec sub banks on?

Went to radio shack, and he couldn't figure out what is the problem either. The only thing he could think of is that someone took the crystals out of it (I bought off ebay as a "new" item). Are there trunking specific crystals? It does pick up conventional frequencies. Happen to know how I would go about checking this?

If all else fails, I'll buy scancat and try that. I sort of hate to do that though if my unit actually turns out to be defective.

It will not track your system without the control channel.
I programmed all 15 channels in. I also tried just with what is supposed to be the control channel.

there are no crystals in this radio its 2006 not the 60's or 50's. the dec codes are the talk group IDS if you want the pro-2051 to trunk talk groups you need to have the DEC codes programed into your 2051, if this radio had crystals in it it would be about 5 foot by 10 foot in size when crystals where used, you needed one to recive and one to transmit so given the fact that the pro-2051 can recive from about 25mhz to 1300mhz and crystals are about the size of .25" x .50" they wont fit. and as i told you, you only need to program the control channel and the dec codes the talk group ids.

P.S. if it picks up conventional frequencies it is working, you have not yet programed right for trunking frequencies it can be a big pain in the butt, I dont have time to get into it tonight but can help you with it this weekend but maybe someone here will help you out before then. good luck.

Well I programmed talk group IDs at one point and it still did the same thing. I've tried all sorts of combinations and settings, and still haven't gotten anywhere.

The radio shack guy gave me a price list of everything they can get for the 2051, so if you think it's something internal, let me know.

Thanks for the help lowboy, I'll keep working on it, but it looks like I probably will need your help this weekend. If you'd rather talk on AIM, my sn is the same on there as here.

could it maybe have something to do with frequencies from 2 systems mixing ( the xxx.xx750 and
xxx.xx250 ) and only one control channel being designated? Here in Lee Co. MS we have the same situation but they are listed as seperate sites with "cloned" or "simulcast" broadcast and each one has it's "own" control freq. .

I don't think its the radio, I think it's how it must be programmed or that it can't find the control channel.

Do you have the correct bank enabled? If you hold on 858.7625, do you hear any noise?

When programming, I programmed just into bank 1 and set it to the correct trunking system. When I hold on 858.7625 I hear nothing.

try all the channels for this system one of them will be the control channel.
http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=517
I have found that the area that i live changes the control every week and use ones that this web page does not list as pri.. or sec.. channels
it will kind of sound like this, these are digital trunk system sound bites, look for the one that says
EDACS (Ericsson)
trunking control channel.
it will be very close to the type of control sound that you are looking for, here is the link.

Do I program each separately and listen? Thing is when it scans all of them it never stops on any of them, no matter if I have pressed the data button or not. Like it's not picking up anything on any of them.

check this form and see what freqs the people that live in your county are useing it is a good place to start.

http://radioreference.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12

the data button is is not for trunking and is of no use in trunking read page 29 of your user guide, the trunk button puts your scanner in trunking mode but for it to trunk you must input the right control channels and the right dec codes for that control channel or put it in ID mode scan and it will display the IDS. read page 46,47,48,,49,50,52,53,54,55,56,57 and 58.

hey

I got the cable and I have the demo of scanlite installed. All I can get is the main screen. I can set it to 2051 (I guess I have it set to the right com port), but the only thing I can then do is click program radio, which makes the program disappear.
