I am getting a 296D scanner soon, my question is I understand the battery that the radio comes with is 4.8 volts but also have been reading that people have been trying to adapt #4 double AA batterys to it which is 6 volt. would #4 double AA battery at 6 volt be ok to use on the uniden 296D radio or should you use #3 double AA at 4.5 volts.

Thank You

The 296's battery pack uses 4 Nickel-Metal Hydride cells which are 1.2 volts each, whereas alkaline batteries are 1.5 volts each. You can buy NiMH AA's now, and I'm sure others have adapted these to work in the 296. One of the nice things about this besides being cheaper is many brands of NiMH AA's have a 2300mAh capacity where the 296's pack is only 1500mAh.

I'm the one who most recently made that AA adapter. I currently use (4) 2500 NiMH batteries and it works fine. I'd strongly suggest charging them OUTSIDE of the radio. You can go to your local Sam's Club and pick up (8) NiMH cells and the charger from Energizer for under $20. WalMart might have a variation of this, also.
