131.425, or a typo? You're even getting squitters so that one is on your doorstep...

I have logged 131.125 before.

However, I was not yet aware of ACARS traffic on 136.700 or 136.750. I'll add them to my target list.

It's starting to look like everything above 136.650 is being assigned for ACARS/VDL2. I logged Porter voice traffic on 136.875 a while ago, but they were the only voice user I had heard up that high.

Finally confirmed traffic on 136.7 being received from the Toronto area. (Aircraft in central Pennsylvania flying YUL-IAD at the time.)

From my location near Albany, NY, I have logged ACARS transmissions on each of the following frequencies:

129.125
130.025
130.450
130.825
131.125
131.550
136.575
136.650
136.675
136.725
136.775
136.800
136.825
136.850

I am also monitoring 136.700 and 136.750 as possible additional ACARS channels.

131.475 too Dave, you've no doubt heard it from (mostly) Air Canada flights here in Toronto. It goes waaayyyy back. <g>

Not sure how much you'll receive from Albany, but certainly back in Rochester there would have been loads of activity from around Toronto.

I ran acarsdeco2 on it overnight and logged these:

Air Canada
American
Atlas Air
ExpressJet
Korean Air
Sky Regional
Swift Air
US Airways

Not a bad haul for about 10 hours of monitoring.

Having just gotten into acars decoding I thought I would try the frequencies listed in this thread. So far I have gotten hits on all frequencies except 130.825, 136.750 and 136.675, all the others are pretty active in this area (I'm about 52 miles northeast of Charlotte Douglas Airport).

Most of what I logged so far is United, US Airways, Jet Blue, Delta,Northwest,Continental Express, Midwest, Air Canada, UPS and American Airlines.regularly in the last 24 hrs. I also logged an Air France, Areomexico, Atlas Air and a Orbest flight (pretty sure these aren't common into or out of Charlotte) which may have been passing by.

I'm currently using a BCT15X with the stock but plan to put an antenna up outside to increase my range ane hopefully get more of the message traffic.

One question I have is regarding squitter messages, I thought they were just in ADS-B but my log for last night shows an acars messages shows SQ in the message label and in the block ID the word uplink. Is this just a decoding error in acarsd or do they sometimes send squitter messages over acars? ,

You will see squitter messages if you are within range of a ground station.

Right on, but not associated with a fixed ground station as the term applies to ACARS/VDL/HFDL. Perhaps that's what he's referring to with ADS-B. Now I'm really curious!

Squitter Message

Since I am new to this I could have misunderstood what I read on another site concerning squitter messages. That's what is leading to the confusion about when I would see them (monitoring acars vs ADS-B). I guess you can see them in both. As for being near a ground station I'm 50 or so miles NE of Charlotte Douglas so I don't no if I would pick ground vehicles this far out. Here is the message log if anyone can explain what the message said.

The first message is a transmission from the aircraft acknowledging something they were sent from their dispatch and includes 'free text' entered on the keyboard in the cockpit..

The second message is indeed a squitter from a ground station, that one in Wilmington N.C., a long way from your location in VHF range. I've seen the same, where a SQ message from a station hundreds of miles away appears once, maybe twice, and is never seen again. I'd put that down to atmospherics or a once in a million chance bounce, but certainly it's not typical. These are usually 7W to maybe 20W base station transceivers they use (that's a fact, we do the site service on all of them here in Canada) with standard air band antennas, nothing special at all, so ground to ground range of 100+ miles just isn't going to happen reliably. Or by design.

BTW, the 136975 at the end of the squitter indicates that a VDL2 ground station is located at the same site.

Definitely confusing as ACARS and ADS-B are completely separate things, operating in different radio frequency bands using different protocols.

Thanks for explaining that for me. Hard to believe that made it's way here considering there are other major airports that are closer. Definitely have to chalk that up as a one time lucky catch.
