The mounties say 355 before they talk on the mic, anyone know why they say this ?

I used to be a C.O.P. (Citizens On Patrol) a number of years ago. COMS Dispatch in those days was 416 for Southwest Nova. I *believe* 355 is a new COMS code, or possibly a code to the area you are actively listening to.

355 is the last three characters of the call sign for their dispatch centre in Truro (or as it's called in RCMP lingo, the OCC - operational communications centre) I'm not sure what the first three characters of the call sign are, somebody else might be able to confirm that.

416 would be XJE416, the call sign for the RCMP comms centre in Halifax, which is no longer regularly used.

Thanks Chris, I figure it would be easier for them to say "dispatch" rather than 355 like HRP does, easier than in South Shore area where FD and Police always say "Scotia Business Center" all the time, that's too long lol

It seems to be somewhat standard procedure. Back in 80's in Ontario, the units used to call Hamilton 23 or just 23. The call sign for the Hamilton office was XJF23.

Someone told me not long ago what the 3 letter part of the telecomms in Truro is but now I can't find it. What I wonder about as well is why if they already had XJA82 in Truro, did they change over to using 355? For sure it is now a peculiarity of the RCMP that they stick to using the official call sign (even if they usually leave out part of it). It doesnt seem so long ago to me that the Halifax city police used their's all the time... I think it was XJF43....

I recall seeing VFX-355 somewhere.
HPD was XJF-99
DCP was XJF-43

Thanks Stephen, I had it mixed up between Hfx and Dartmouth... and with your reminder I can recall that XJF99 as well as the XJF43.. and it seemed that they always used the full form.... not just the number part. After that fell out of use, they started to use the term "station" and often you still hear that used even though the dispatchers aren't at a station.
