Does the new 396 digital scanner have the "weather alert" while you are scanning your programmed channels, like the radio shack models, and will there be a mobile version of the 396 soon? How does the wx alert function, an alert tone only or automatically opens squelch to here broadcast? scannerdwweb.

Hello,

The BCD396T has a Weather Alert Priority Scan, and Weather Alert Only with SAME Codes. During an Alert, the unit with display an Alpha Tag. For example, During a SAME Code Test, the unit with display: "TEST WEEKLY". An Alert with Priority WX Alert and Scan will display "WX WARNING".

In each case, an alert tone is broadcast, and the announcement will proceed following alert tone.

That was a little confusing. Maybe this will help:

When scanning, the 396 has WX PRI which will alert on the 1050 Hz tone, not SAME. The SAME function is only for the dedicated WX ALERT mode.

There will no doubt be a mobile version of the 396, but it's a way off yet (maybe next year).

I know the WX ALERT will open the squelch. I think the WX PRI will as well, but I'm not positive.

Thanks for the good info guys, I love features of the uniden line but have long awaited the wx alert function like my pro-95 has. It is hard to carry a scanner and a weather radio at the same time. Hope this is a feature uniden will continue and expand on for us in the base and portable models. Would really like to see the similar features of the wx100 wx radio incorporated into the scanners, specifically adjustable volume on the alert tone, automatic squelch open, and squelch close after message ends, not the 5 minute voice run like some. Hope for the future, thanks uniden for all the great products, customer support, service, and update abilities via online. Also thanks to Upman and uniden for listening to our concerns, requests, and helping to make the scanning hobby alive and easy to use and enjoy. Scannerdweeb.

I am a little confused by your answer. It seems to me that the 396T works just the same as the 95.

Both will allow you to put the WX channel as a priority channel, both will check it periodically, both will alert when the alert tone (the 1050 Hz tone) is detected, both will display alert data, both will scan normally while doing this.

Neither is capable of using the SAME area decoding while in normal scanning mode.

What is it that you thing the 95 will do that the 396T (indeed all recent Uniden and GRE scanners) won't? :?

thanks for the reply, I didn't mean to confuse you, I was only using the pro-95 as a comparison, all the uniden scanners I have to date either do not have any wx alert, or use the wx stand-by function and cannot scan the conventional channels during the stand-by mode. My latest is bc796d, a great scanner with alot of useful features except wx alert while scanning. Hope this clears the confusion, thanks for the reply. scannerdweeb.

The reason for this is because SAME uses a digital data burst that lasts maybe 2 seconds while the analog 1050 HZ tone lasts like 6 or 7 seconds. During the priority feature which samples every 4 or 5 seconds, it will catch the longer 1050 HZ tone. But, since the SAME digital burst is very short, the priority would need to sample it almost every 100 milliseconds, which is impossible.

It's not impossible, but you wouldn't hear much vocie traffic.
