I had written an earlier thread about my speaker becoming garbled. I appreciate the response on where to get one. A friend just called me and his just went out. Does anyone know if this a common problem with the 396 or just a coincidense?

I try not to raise the volume past 11, usually it stays between 5 and 9. Any speaker will blow when damaging sounds come through at high volumes. But ive had no problems

I bet Uniden got a bad batch of speakers, I've had my 396 since launch 2+ years ago, and regulary run the volume at 13 to 15 while in the car. Been doing that for years, speaker sounds great.

Been charging the 396 with the factory wall wort since the beginning, never had any charging problems either. i've probably charged the batteries in the 396 more than 600 times so far.

I'm having some of the same problems now also, I do run it at high volume when driving like XTS3000 said, but never all the way up with no problems. I was listening to it last night at about 7 with no problems, I been using it most of the day today with an ear monitor and when I unpluged it I got no sound. I went through the settings and checked things, took the back off and checked the wires, and still nothing. It doesn't seam like the speaker is blown, so I'm a bit lost as to why it isn't working. Would resetting it maybe help.

I know the feeling. My speaker just died this evening as well. Hoping I get lucky like you did and it decides to return. Yeah, I wish. :)

Just curious, how far apart did you pull your 396? I pulled the back oof but not the boards out. I alos did a full reset and nothing. It burps now and then though like it wants to start working. sound is ok on external too.

I had a similar problem with a cordless phone, when using a headset the contact would stick in the jack, then after awhile it would work again. you might want to check that, if it stopped working after to had an earphone plugged in.

i had the same problem with my 396...quit shortly after i got it. i ended up taking the speaker out and cut it open without damaging it and noticed one of the little copper strands was broken. so i removed the "garbage" part of the strand, unwound a long enough piece from the speaker cone then reattached it back to the connection point on the speaker. that was about 6 months ago and its been working fine since....
i dont recommend this unless you trust your soldering skills....and are confident that the speakers the problem.

I would suggest a little contact cleaner in the ear phone plug may just cure the problem. They oxidize quite easily in conditions, where there is a high humid condition (we breath on our units) ;-(

i popped the speaker in my 396 , about 7-6 months ago , and ordered 2 replacement speakers from uniden , 5.80 i believe and that included shipping ...still have a spare speaker ... anyways , posted a thread on how to replace the speaker , and slicerwizard on this site really helped me out on replacing the speaker , no problems since and i still have the second spare speaker . im not electronically inclined , but it was simple enough for me to pop the bad one out and solder the new one in. people here will steer you in the right direction on how to go about stuff . but im i chicken and tried it myself and it worked, but a 500.00 scanner is taking a risk .... good luck ..
