Actually I goofed when I said the software came with the scanner. In the past, Uniden has included software in the box with the scanner (at least
they had with the 246, 296, ect.) However in this case the UASD software wasn't ready until after the scanner had been released. So you need to download it from the product support page at:
BCD396 Support page
Once you have that, go over to the California forum and ask for a UASD file for the 396 for the areas you want. Be sure you specifiy the UASD for the 396, as I don't believe UASD files for the 246 are completly compatible.
I would expect that in later shipments, there will be a disk or CD with the software as there had been in the past. Sri for the confusion.

USAD (BCD396T Uniden Advanced Scanner Director) is the software package you can download from Uniden (free) which will control and manage your BCD396T radio. It uses system files, which can be copied and shared, and are referred to as UASD or .usd files.

Very simple....a UASD file, which I believe will have a .usd extension, will contain data that you can use in the program for the areas you want.
This way, you have a head start in getting your 396 programmed even before you get it. Of course, you can use the program to edit this file and change it to your liking. I would make a backup copy of the file first, just to be safe.

If you already have the radio, you already have some of the local San Francisco systems programmed in the example data. Oakland, Santa Clara and Alameda all have systems in the pre-loaded data. Marin Co. does not, but if you use the software and take a look at the pre-loaded systems, you can certainly build your own system file for MERA.johncoleman said:

use the uniden software or do it directly copy the frequency in red to your scanner . when you run your scanner run it in id search and save all the hits you get and that way you can go back and edit the alpha tag to reflect what user it is (alpha tag = user) from the same link above.
this way you will learn how to operate the scanner and about all the system much better and quicker then if you get a file spoon-fed...........
