Hi, I ordered the scanner today and I was wondering what antenna should I get for listening to Baltimore County and Baltimore City. I see Waltel has a 800mhz Phantom Elite. Does it matter that one is digital and one is analog? as long as it is all 800mhz freqs correct? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am still learning.

I myself have switched to the Antenex DEXC821SM when I monitor my 800 trunking systems, works great. Also the radio shack 800 antenna works well but looks akward with that adapter on the scanner. No question is a dumb question all my teachers have said throughout college.

Antenex

JPM,
Is the Antenex significantly better in reception than the RS 800?
Been looking at the Antenex, but am wondering if it's worth spending ANOTHER $30?

To tell you the truth its the same as the rs 800 antennabut I don't like the akward appearance when using the adapter. The BCD396T is a sm type antenna. Now the other day I noticed that the fire department trunked radios had a 8" antenna to its portable radios at the yearly feast yhey had this past weekend.

I don't know where you are getting the DEXC821SM for $30, but I sell them for $17.50 by clicking here.

The BCD396T does use a type SM connector, which is a female SMA on the radio.

Those 8" antennas are most likely half wave dipoles. I have those for the BCD396T as well by clicking here.

So monitoring Baltimore County (856., 857., 858., 859., 860 MHz) and Baltimore City (866., 867., 868. MHz) the Antenex DEXC821SM antenna (821-902MHz) will serve good for me? I see Jeff has them for $17.50.

The antenna supplied with the scanner will serve you well.

OK - I'm curious - what's the difference in these antennas? I have a RS 800Mhz antenna on my 396... how are the ones mentioned above different (other than I don't/amy not need the SMA to BNC adapter)?

If the DEXC821SM works even HALF as well as the Antenex antenna that I purchased from you a few weeks ago to use with my 796D I'm sold. Thanks again for the great product Jeff.

Jeff told me I should get the EXC-806-SM instead, he said (quote) "The only difference is the one you bought covers 824-902MHz which is for cell phones, while the EXC-806-SM covers 806-866MHz which is the public safety trunking band." (un-quote) so I ordered the one he said. I will let you know how it works when I receive it.
