In New York its 941 usual said "nine four one" and refers to the section in New York Mental Health law for an involuntary, temporary, comittment for evaluation by law enforcement.

A 1192 either said as "one one nine two" or "eleven ninety-two" is the vehicle and traffic law section for DWI. 1192 is used generically over the radio for any stop or arrest related to alcohol.

DUI. But the history of it is vague as far as I can tell...dunno where it originated. One theory was that it was 502 of the vehicle code...but I don't know for sure.

I have also heard that from an ex-Chico PD officer who worked there when it was still 502 VC.

The term "Duece" came from section 23102 of the CVC, since changed to 23152. It was in common usage from my years in LA from 1968 to 1972 and then in northern California until I retired in 2004. If there was a 502 of the penal code or vehicle code, it was before my time since every drunk driver I arrested was under one of the two CVC sections.

Gold Star with Oak Leaf Cluster to SAR2401! My memory from my brief residence in Mission Viejo, Orange County in 1979-80 told me that it was '22252' but I'm perfectly willing to accept that it was actually one (or both!) of the two Sections cited. Thanks!
