I've had my new 536 for about a month now and have seemed to notice some problems with the volume or more specific the volume control. Sometimes it seems the volume just goes crazy on a certain channel and when I try to adjust it via the volume control it just goes from wide open to nothing just by touching to knob. And then some transmissions are a lot louder than others on the same channel. Anyone else have these or similar problems?

If the problem is only happening on one channel, it's not the scanner.

When you turn the volume or squelch knobs, you will see the levels in the upper right corner of the display:

S=xx
V=xx

where xx is the squelch and volume levels (00-31).

If the number changes by one for each click of knob rotation, there is nothing wrong with the scanner, and the radio system you're listening to is having issues. But if the volume number changes randomly, or skips numbers as you turn the knob, then you have a problem with the volume rotary encoder.

You can try setting the AGC for the affected channel. But, as others have pointed out here, and I have found myself, the AGC setting seems to be for appearances only, and doesn't do much.

That wouldn't cause random fluctuations. It would cause a channel to be consistently loud or quiet.

Are you having trouble with specific channels, and not others? Is this a public safety agency, or a private or business user? I too have encountered volume fluctuations on individual channels. Usually, it's the same offenders. I lower the volume, and then can't hear the reply from the other unit. I just chalk it up to variations in the equipment being used, or perhaps mis-adjustment of said equipment.

After watching it closely it seems like it's one specific channel, and one or two specific responders on that channel. I guess I'll just have to get used to it.
