Hearing NC State Police on 42.820 and unknown traffic (possible NC also) on 42.920.

just added 42.38 into my own scanner and am picking up what sounds like NC Troop B.

Two easy ways to confirm if what you are hearing on the above frequencies is North Carolina Highway Patrol:

- the PL tone will always be 173.8 Hz on the low band channels

- dispatch will identify on most radio exchanges with the communications center location, as well as the radio I-D of the unit they are calling or talking to

BTW - both North and South Carolina have a "highway patrol," rather than "state police" organization. The emphasis of these agencies is enforcing driving laws and regulations, and they are the primary motor vehicle accident investigation agency in some counties.

I am using a PRO 2052, and I don't believe I can take advantage of the PL tones (if I am wrong, please tell me though). I can't hear any of the skipping frequencies crystal clear, but I am pretty sure about 42.82 using the "Raleigh - C###" unit ids. As for 42.380, I see based on RR that that is NC Troop B based in Elizabethtown, and it sounds like the dispatch is using some form of "Elizabethtown - B###" over the radio.

42.380 on Missouri Highway Patrol transmissions are the following call letters:

KAA202= Troop H (Northwest Missouri area)

KAA958= Troop I (Southcenteral Missouri area)

Low band wide open in NC

I am located in Asheville and this afternoon was hearing a wide array of low band stuff. Unfortunately I have a pro-2051 in my vehicle and it does not decode PL. I pulled into a parking lot and started writing. I have the scanner attached to a larsen NMO-50 base loaded whip antenna and heard the following:

I have never heard spanish speaking stations on these freq's until today (I used to hear them in the 42 band):
35.64
35.40
35.32
35.92
35.94
35.58
31.12
31.52
31.72
31.92
33.28
35.74
35.13

Also picked up:

35.06....NY accent
33.78...Somewhere in Ohio (I am pretty sure)
33.86....Somewhere in Ohio
33.90...requesting a brush truck...also Ohio
45.22...Oklahoma HP
46.54...possibly New York
44.70....These guys were either on a talk in frequency or car-car. They were set up watching somebody on a lake. I thought maybe a wildlife channel, but I think it was Oklahoma HP.

I have never heard Troop I use 42.38. (Doesn't mean they don't use it)

Troop I's Dispatch Frq. is 42.58.

I programmed it the 42.38 in my Pro95.
I was able to pickup;
Troop G Willow Sprngs from my location.
That's only about 60 or so miles from my location.


Also according to the DB, Troops A, G, I are licensed for 42.38.
Troop A is using it for Car 2 Car freqency.


btw, I haven't been able to pickup a whole lot of ducting stuff most of the night.

it's not 6/17, but I'm listening to Cleveland PD with about 50% error (which is a lot better than not being able to RX them at all) from Detroit.

I think the reason for a lot of my RX problems is NexTel and this interleaved spectrum in the 851-855

Yes they come in real clear some days. Line of sight and slight ducting. Lake Eire has no obstructions.

Not to dispute your catch, but Cleveland PD uses VSELP which is not monitorable by any scanner. What radio were you using that was encountering 50% error?

VSELP is vtastic, I ended up being able to receive it equally well with the portable radio sitting on the bed post.

and I guess I can leave it up to your imagination to figure out what radios do VSELP and which don't. and FWIW, the amount of error is just a rough guess judging by how much stuff was actually intellegeble and which weren't.

As this is being written, the low end of 6 meters <52 MHz is jumping with people with HT's working into the midwest. Ought to be an interesting time for VHF low!
