I jump on six when it's open. I used to use SSB and CW, but the digital modes seem to have taken over. Now, I mostly use FT8 and make the odd meteor scatter contact using MSK144.

Last year I managed contacts with Europe and Japan on six, but this year wasn't as hot. Or at least I wasn't around when the openings took place..

I also used to make a lot of Aurora contacts on CW and SSB, but even with the sunspots and all, I haven't heard any AU openings at all this year.

jwt873 Nice, FB on the JA. Digital not my cup of tea. Been quite a while since I worked EU. But it sure is fun when it opens up.

The thing with digital is that it has become, "Be there or be square"..

During the JA opening, I was picking up some of them at S9.. Signals were great. So I went down to the SSB portion of the band and there was nothing.. Called CQ.. no replies. I went back to 50.313 they were still pounding in.. So it was FT8 or nothing...

I devoted almost 5 years to operating on 6! Went portable/mobile for a lot of grid squares…built a 5 ele beam and got it up to 40ft for use at home! All CW n SSB…even the odd AM QSO thrown in! When the activity moved to FT8 I went back to HF…just not my cup of tea! old guys still like to rag hew!!!

I enjoy operating 6 meters. As was mentioned, the vast bulk of the activity is on FT8 which is understandable given the amazing weak signal capability it has. I prefer a good SSB or CW QSO, but you need to be able to operate where “the action is” and it has clearly migrated to FT8. I will often leave my station on monitoring 50.313 and when the band opens it’s pretty easy to tell where. It is also interesting to tune around the 50.060-50.080 CW beacon band at times as well. My station is 200w to a halo at 35 ft. and my best DX so far was working 5T5PA a couple years ago.

Sadly I live where there is far too much noise for any weak signal stuff.
