I just got a 796D to mount indash of my vehicle but before I do that, I'd would like to fully test the unit for known problems and make sure I don't run into issues after It's hard mounted indash. Thanks in advance for your submissions.

This may not apply very much to your plans, but I have just started trying to do audio logging with my 796, and I find that the "Tape Out" jack on this radio sucks, or at least the firmware driving it. It seems to clip the first part of every signal.

The radio in itself works great. I did a single mod to the radio - cut part of the rubber gasket around the speaker housing, which otherwise blocks the sound coming out. Otherwise, it's lived in my truck the whole time.

Thanks. I was going to use the tape out for a earpiece option but that wasn't going to work I realized. I will just splice the line to the ext speaker when I want to use an ear piece. Thanks for the input.

I hate the tape out on the BC-796D too, not only does it clip part of the conversations off but it also has a pop at the end of every transmission. I wish there was a way to have the tape out jack on all the time. Somebody said there was a hack with the Arc250 software but I haven't looked into really.

796D problems

See my earlier posts in this Talk Group limitation software problem. Unless Uniden has corrected the BC796 software, the 796D will not process talkgroups 40,000 and above correctly. A software upgrade is available and should be made ASAP.

"tape out" delay on 796d

Reply on the "tape out". I too have a 796d and experienced the 3-5 sec delay before it starts to record, but try this. I found when plugging the 1/8 inch mono plug in the jack, it felt incorrect, so I pulled it back out and reinserted it only one detent and it works immediately and does not cut the front end of audio off. I suspect that the tape out jack is a stereo jack not a mono jack, I plugged in a set of stereo speakers with a 1/8 stereo plug and got the same immediate response, when trying a 1/8 mono plug from my external speaker in the tape out jack I experienced the same delay in the signal as before. The manual states only that a 1/8"(3.5mm)plug is required, but does not specify stereo or mono for the tape out jack. Try an adapter to go from mono to stereo and see how that works. Any other info on this, please let me know. scannerdweeb.
