Hello all. Just moved to Mi. and i'm dealing with the 800mhz freq's for the first time. I have a 796D and am only able to get maybe a 1 on the signal bar. The few transmissions I pick up are weak and usually garbled. I live in roseville and have the mt. clemens and detroit towers programmed. Is this normal? I have the stock antennae, but I think it should be better. An outside ant. is not an option for me right now. thx in advance for any suggestions

Detroit is a little far depending on what area you are receiving.

Try programming in the Warren data and see what you get. I drive from St Clair (Port Huron) to Detroit each day and start getting the Detroit traffic on 400's about 16 mile and 94.

I got rid of the stock antenna on my BCT-8 due to the cheap plastic adapter.

From Roseville you should get both of those towers very well, you might even be able to get the Romeo tower from there as well. My guess would be the antenna.

What is a good antenna for the 800's. I don't want to lose much signal strength in the 400's. I also dont like the stock antenna. It's a joke to give you that with a $500 scanner. I'm afraid i'm going to break something internal when taking it on or off. thanks for the replies

I live in Fraser and am using the antenna that came with the 796D. I get the Detroit Tower with 3 Bars, the Mt. Clemens with 4 Bars and the Warren with 5 Bars. Romeo is a little weak with 1 to 2 Bars.

To listen to certain agencies do you have to have certain towers programmed in.

You have to be within range of the tower(s) that the agency is using...

On the Detroit, Mt. Clemens, Romeo and sometimes Richmand Towers I can hear most od District 2 traffic, Us Boarder Patrol, DNR all of Macomb County that is on the State system. Basically all the 2XXX talk groups (8XXX talk groups are denied on the Detroit and Mt. Clemens Towers and are only on the Detroit City tower). Warren System should come in with at least 4 bars.
WARREN:
853.4875
854.4875
855.4875
856.0875

Mt. Clemens:
868.9
868.4

Detroit
868.9375
868.9625

Warren is Mot type II analog
Mt. Clemens and Detroit is Mot II apco25 9600 all digital
Broadcasts appear on multiple towers at a time. I have three scanners and 2 are digital. I can hear the same transmission on two different towers at the same time.
