No. You might hear bits and pieces of various conversations, but to hear a talkgroup on a trunked system requires a trunked scanner.

To expound on this...

You can monitor the traffic on a TRS system with the following limitations:

  1. If it is a digital system and you are listening on a scanner not capable of digital, than you will not hear much beyond a weird carrier.
  2. You will not be able to identify who is talking unless you have been listening for a while. (I could listen to Onslow 800 and tell you whats going on, but I couldnt do it if I didnt have the Trunking scanner to first guide me in the right direction).
  3. You will have to lock out the control channel so that you listen to everything else. That is fine if there is only one Control channel, but if they use multiple, you will be locking and unlocking every day or more often, very frustrating.
So, yes you can monitor the TRS systems using a conventional scanner, but you will not be able to tell who is who without a scorecard.

Hope this helps...
