im not trying to hijack this thread, i have my bct996xt radio power on an egis timer relay. Using the black and red plug on the rear. I want the display light to only come on with ignition and go off when out of truck. I understand I need to use the orange wire. However when you add power to the orange the light dims... than remove power and the light gets brighter................ do i have to add a relay and program the uniden somehow ???

As posted by others here that is the design of the scanner it is a DIMMER only. From the user manual.
  1. Connect the ORANGE lead to one side of the headlamp switch so that when you activate the headlights, the scanner’s LCD display changes intensity. Be sure all the connections are routed away from any potentially pinching or slicing sheet metal.

HI, THAT TRIGGER WILL LOWER THE BRIGHTNESS DUE TO BEING DARK IN CABIN. I WANT OPPOSITE... BRIGHT IN CAR AND DARK WHEN OUT OF CAR TO LOWER PARASITIC DRAW. THX

I see what your trying to do... Car not running but leaving the radio on with display backlight off... Thats not what the Orange wire cannection is for...
But your not going to gain much on the current draw by turning the backlight off...
The radio itself will draw way more current than the backlight LED's do...

Also you can turn the backlight off on the radio itself...
