996P2 Backlight Questions

A couple questions about the 996P2 backlight:

1. Is it possible to have the backlight come on only when a transmission is received? (I don't think this is possible, but wanted to check)
2. Do users usually leave it set to be on all the time? Will that kill the backlight life?

I have had 996p2's several of them backlight on for years that goes for my 996p2's that were bought when they were 1st released.
