Here is an idea. If you cannot do this, how hard would it be to incorporate into their next upgrade? UPMAN may have an idea.

With the "Unit ID" mode, you can see the individual unit ID's on a trunked system, but how hard would it be to be able to change them with their own tag so you could designate them to a specific vehicle?

So instead of ID# 12345 it would show Engine 9 (or whatever).

Seems like it would only take a minor software tweak as most of the processing data is already there. Of course it would require some memory usage, but I would gladly sacrifice some of the 25K "channels" for the ability to tag unit IDs.

You already can.

Create a group for RIDs

Set up a TG as i12345 and alpha tag it as Engine 9. Add as many RIDs as you need or the system will allow.

Enter the number with an "i" in front of it

So talkgrouop "i12345" is tagged with Engine 9.

Ok, thanks all.

Let me see if I have this right though,

So if say Unit ID number is 12345, I can enter i12345 as a talkgroup in that system and it will display it as an ID? So each individual piece of apparatus could (theoretically) be tagged for it's individual unit as long as I wanted to type in each UNIT ID though?

Very neat if that is the case, Is this documented anywhere and I have just missed it, or is it kinda a secret?

Thanks again,
WM

There have been other posts elsewhere on RR describing this.

What you're doing is very similar to adding a talkgroup. The only difference is the radio ID number (with the i in front) is taking the place of the TGID, and the "alias" associated with the radio ID number is the alpha tag.

Below is a couple I've entered using Arc software:

i22062 Unit: 632-E Off Off Off On Off Auto NONE 0
i26067 Unit: 632-D Off Off Off On Off Auto NONE 0
i26148 Unit: 634-B Off Off Off On Off Auto NONE 0

Here is a pic I have of my 396XT which should help you out.

The system being Monitored is the Durham County, NC 800Mhz System.

The talkgroup being monitored is the Durham County Sheriff Dept Dispatch (DCSO DISP).

The Radio ID (RID) or Unit ID (UID) is the dispatch console ID of 743211.

I created a group called RIDs and added several RIDs including the dispatch console using the UID of i43211. I then alphatagged the i43211 UID with the alphatag of "DSO DISP 743211" which is what you see above.

Hope this helps to visualize what the others have said.

The above works for both the BCD396XT and BCD996XT.

Happy Monitoring

Excellent information and thank you all. This will add a new facet to my scanner use.

Another question along those lines, does RR list (or have any interest in listing) any unit ID numbers? Around here, I would not go through the trouble of logging individuals radios, but I would log the specific apparatus IDs.

We do list RID/UID Ranges in the Wiki.
