Just wondering... the Yaesu FT-991A; what is the green (receive) LED for VFO B for anyway? Under what circumstance would it illuminate? I can't seem to come up with any. I suspect it's just there for completeness (in case Yaesu at some point released firmware which could use it).

I welcome any informed, educated, experienced or otherwise interesting comments or answers other than the "Captain Obvious" answer of "It's to indicate when VFO B is receiving."

Thanks in advance. ;-)

I have a 991A but rarely use split or Vfo B. Never really gave it any thought.

Anyone who has considered it at least a little have any thoughts? As far as I can tell, VFO B is for transmit purposes only. Normally both the transmit and receive are under either MEM or VFO A, while split moves the xmit (and only the xmit) over to VFO B.

I guess I'm asking around on this because after digging through the manual and playing with the radio I can find no condition where the green light in VFO B would be illuminated, and yet Yaesu has the hardware there just the same. Yaesu strikes me as the type of company who don't often do much without a reason, so it makes me wonder if I'm missing something. If so, I would love to be educated on it or at least educated to the fact that it is an orphaned bit of hardware.

I do love my 991A!

Try calling 714-827-7600 That's Yaesu's tech number, maybe they could shed light on that ?

On the Icom 7610 the filter key led does not come on either so its not just a Yaesu thing.

Since I struck out here, I did try and call Yaesu today. The 991A tech was on vacation. The person I did speak with gave my question a listen but advised I would need to wait for the 991A to return to the office. Once I do get a hold of him, I'll post back here with what I learn so that any future forum searcher looking for the info might find it.

I do like to post questions in forums first rather than contact tech support if it isn't urgent, and I don't think it's ever been urgent for me so far.

I'm not familiar (enough) with the iCOM 7610 to see the comparison, but it sounds like you're saying it's similar in that there is an LED present that seems to have no purpose whatsoever; at least in terms of the firmware released for that radio? If I understand you correctly, and it ends up being that the 991A has an orphaned LED, then I guess the 991A has some company. It will be interesting to see what Yaesu says once I speak to them.

Nobody really knows if there is an LED in the Filter switch on the IC-7610. There's a plugged hole in the switch. It could be an LED. Or, it could be just a plug.

On Icoms, the filter is in one of three states. The bandwidth, center frequency, and slope is adjustable for each of the three filters. Tapping the switch moves through the filters sequentially: Filter 1, Filter 2, Filter 3, and back to Filter 1, etc. Having an LED in the switch would be pointless because there's no "Filter Off" position, it's always "On".
