It's working. Sometimes not much is going on, as I live in a small town/county.

I'm lost. I'm not sure what i'm suppose to do to get it all together. I have this file "asteriskathome-2.8.iso" but i can't open it. Windows gives me the choose program screen. so I tried winzip but it does nothing. I'f some one would explain step by step how they got it going I would really appreciate it.

I'm not sure you fully understand. It installs a Linux operating system (CENTOS)....If you aren't familiar with Linux, I wouldn't toy with it on your computer too much...

But, you burn the ISO file to a CD as an image, then you boot from it...

Again, if you're not sure, don't do it -- you overwrite your Windows install.

Not really. It is a fully functional telephone system that big business can use in call centers, and anything really. Some people are using Asterisk with hundreds of phone lines.

I think I finally got the conference worked out so that it now detects disconnects. Before it would never detect when someone disconnected, and would show them as connected on my end, and was eating up all my bandwidth. Now when someone hangsup, my system recognizes it, and stops the transmission. The fix wasn't the way I wanted to do it, but it works. So now you guys can call all you want, as I don't care as much now, because it will now disconnect from my end when you guys disconnect. So listen away!

BTW, anyone who calls in might want to mute their phone, so no one else can hear your conversation.

Good web links

Now that things at home calmed down, i've been doing some research.

Here are some good links:

http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/

http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.php?page=Asterisk at Home

http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/YATE
(Windows Platform!)

http://yate.null.ro/pmwiki/index.php
(the main site)

For those interesed in YATE, here is a breif summery:

Yate - Yet Another Telephony Engine

Yate is a next-generation telephony engine; while currently focused on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and PSTN, its power lies in its ability to be easily extended. Voice, video, data and instant messaging can all be unified under Yate's flexible routing engine, maximizing communications efficiency and minimizing infrastructure costs for businesses.

Yate can be used as a:

* VoIP server
* VoIP client
* VoIP to PSTN gateway
* PC2Phone and Phone2PC gateway
* H.323 gatekeeper
* H.323 multiple endpoint server
* H.323<->SIP Proxy
* SIP session border controller
* SIP router
* SIP registration server
* IAX server and, or client
* IP Telephony server and, or client
* Call center server
* IVR engine
* Prepaid and, or postpaid cards system

It looks like if you want to use it for the Windows world, you need to compile it yourself.
For those living in a Debian world, it seems to work there to from my reading.
I have Debain set up on a Pentium 350. I rarely use it. Seems all you need is a Pentium 300, so I may decide to play on that. If anyone gets YATE working, I'd love to know, since I'd only need one PC at that point!

KLH - what was the solution to your hang-up problem?
Also, as it seems stanaphone.com is free, they will cancel your account if you don't make any outbound calls per term. Its $1.60/min...so I tihnk one call a month, for a phone number?? Its not bad. I hope there's not like $20 in taxes on top of that! ;)

I had to take my IPKall number, and instead of forwarding it straight to my asterisk box, I forwarded it to FWD (www.freeworlddialup) and then forwared my FWD account to my asterisk box. Just another hop the phone call must go through. But it works, so I'm happy. :)

would there be a way to do something like this but instead of using a radio scanner use an online music streaming service, such as satellite radio. Then when you are out away from your home on the go, say hiking or at the gym, etc.. you could just dial a number from your cell phone and hear satellite radio, is this possible?

Satellite radio

Well personally I think this would be an example of bypassing already existing and better working technology . First off, I don't know where you are hiking, but you cell signal may not make it and also why use air-time, burn up you battery, and have you actually run a cell phone for an hour or two straight.. it gets hot.. .
Since you apparently have access to satellite radio, would it be easier to burn off a couple of CDs or download MP3s to something that isn't going to drop calls, go noisy on you etc????? .. If it was for trying to get some data or signal that couldn't be obtained in any other way I could see it. Plus haven't they come out with the portable reciever for satellite, there was one at a trade show back in January, and I could also swear that some of the phones can do MP3.
Add to that , interruptions or calls being sent to mailbox, low quality of audio, is your phone stereo ??? Its not a bad question, but when you start to go thru the possibilities, I just think you will come up with better alternatives.

Yeah, free for you but I'm not about to pay long distance to the Olympia/ Bellingham, Washington area!

Liquid;
"Oh, thats almost too easy! It really is a dedicated PC then!"
Sort of, it's called a server.
"it kind of reminds me of the old days when you were able to do packet radio via 2 meters"
WHAT old days? User to BBS/node connections are still made on 2M & 1.25M 1200bd and 70cM 9600bd AX25 protocol.
"and also cheat by dialing into it w/ your 28.8kbps modem"
Land line lids still cheat using Telnet IP protocol.

Hey guy, you can't weasel your way around the sysop of the NJ2AR JSARS packet station with a ROSE switch, BUSTED! (;->)

the old days when you could tune to multiple packet channels (144.97 145.010 145.030 145.050 145.070 and 145.090) and hear data being passed all over the place. Now, its a really quiet in my neck of the woods..

I do plan on putting my KPC-3 back into service. its one of the early models, w/o the gps port. Packet was fun. I loved running JNOS slave with a Node. Maybe I'll break out the 386 it was running on, and put it back into service. I haven't touched packet in years.. It will be fun to get back into it.

I'll have to get the HF going, so I can play PSK-31. I hear that is a blast. I love the data modes!

hey Warren, did your web page have a live feed at one time?? It was a picture of a BC780 or 785 that constantly updated? How did you run it?? Was it a Windows media encoded picture, or did you play with some PHP. I'm trying to make my site "pretty" like that.

Very cool....yet your only using about 2% of what *'s can do...You could create a full blown partyline with various feeds. But very cool stuff, thanks for thinking out of the box you have a neat project.

That is actually a good idea..

If anyone else is interested in setting up their scanner feed over the phone, send me a PM. I would be willing to host the box, if you have the scanner, and a computer.
