I have recently became the Proud owner of an Icom R20. At the
Lentini Comm. website they offer for sale "Accessories CT-17 CT-17: CI-V Level Converter" for $122.00. On Ebay I found a "controll cable for Icom radios that accepts CI-V interface", Ebay item #5756780417 which can be found at;

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4671&item=5756780417&rd=1

for $9.99 plus $15.01 for delivery USPS.

The Lentini Comm. site is;

http://www.lentinicomm.com/shopping/pricelist.asp?prid=82

I need expert advice if the 2 items are interchangeable, therefore saving
approx. $100.00, if I purchase the cable on Ebay :lol:

David,

This cable should work, the Icom and AOR radios require a TTL level to interface data. What the cable does is convert from TTL to RS-232 to work on a serial port on a computer.

As I recall the ICOM interface allows you to control multiple radios with a single computer and software package. I had a Icom R71A (HF RXer) and R7100 (25 MHz-2 GHz) hooked up and the radios would react to the the appropriate frequency requested. The ICOM radios addressable to operate in a parallel configuration, this is what the CI-V interface really allows for.

I cannot be sure, but some of the Icom's may have had a mono 1/8" plug rather than a stereo plug?? Its been a long time since I played with my CI-V converter, I sold it many years ago!

Hope this helps.

Connecting a PC for data transfer to an Icom R20

Thanx James.
I think what I am trying to ask is; to transfer data,ie. frequencies, from my PC to my Icom R20, Can I use a connection such as the Ebay item
I referenced in my original post?
The connection to the Icom R20, is it made through the external speaker port, or is the connection done in another manner?

THANX again

David,

Not sure where the cable plugs into the radio. I assume the owners manual will indicate where the cable will plug in.

I also see there is a USB cable with programming software for around $50 that will allow you to program the radio and there is also some mention about transfering audio to the computer for recording. Not sure how this is accomplished??

See this Grove web link:

The cable listed on Ebay is for controlling your R20 via a PC. I'm an R20 owner and I don't see a need to control the receiver via a PC, IMO.

In order to transfer data and frequencies to and from your R20 and PC, you need to purchase the proper USB cloning cable. The USB cable connects on the right side of the R20 under the rubber cover labeled "USB". The cable that JamesO referenced is the proper cloning cable.

One other thing, if you have a device such as a digital camera or another device that transfers data to and from a PC, the USB cable for that device may work for the R20. I discovered that the USB cable for my GPS receiver used to transfer maps and waypoint data to and from my PC works on my R20. I saved $50.00. It's well worth checking.

If you happen to have a USB cable that works, go to http://pages.videotron.com/scanman/R20page.htm and download Butel's free cloning software and NFR20 Beta 8.

you can also use

You can also use in place of a CT17 for a single radio. OPC662, OPC478 or RT System CT29A with a stereo to mono apator on it.

The RT systems CT29A cable is about half the price of the ICOM OPC 478, the cable does exactly the same thing.
