Where was it? I heard there was an MVA vehicle rescue this afternoon on the East/West Turnpike at MM 323. Was this another one?

On 476, not sure of MM I thought they said MM30 something but there were a few accidents at this time, I only caught the last calls of EMS crews caught in traffic due to the grid lock. Both lanes were shutdown.

There had been several accidents today on 476, one of them was a rollover with injuries another was an accident involving 4 vehicles. However, I could not piece it all together from the bits I heard. I was wondering if others here had more complete information.

There were several MVC's of varying severity on I76 during the storm. Some in Chester Co, some in Montgomery Co. The MVC w/rescue was about 1 mile from an MVC in Chester Co, placing it close to the county line, but I don't recall eastbound or westbound. I wouldn't say I76 was shut down, as PTC did not declare a Plan X for any of these incidents.

What is a "Plan X"? Is this when they shut down the highway and do not allow anyone on at the interchanges preceding the incident?

What is a "Plan X"? Is this when they shut down the highway and do not allow anyone on at the interchanges preceding the incident?

From a 1998 newsletter story on the turnpike website:

"When a major accident occurs, and/or if clean-up is going to take a long time, the Turnpike will put "Plan X" into effect. Plan X is a system developed to keep additional vehicles from entering the Turnpike and becoming part of the backlog. At times, some vehicles already on the Turnpike are required to exit to help relieve congestion.

"Since we are a limited access system, we don't let people get on the Turnpike at nearby interchanges until the traffic backlog has dispersed," Frank explained. "We give customers cards with maps and directions to use alternate routes. We also notify local police in those areas so they can deal with the additional traffic which flows through their towns."

The Turnpike is working on a plan to let traffic exit the highway through emergency gates which are located between interchanges. Future plans call for the installation of "slip" ramps in some areas. Such ramps would be located between interchanges and will ultimately be part of the Turnpike's electronic toll collection system. They will also be used to move traffic off the Turnpike when serious backlogs resulting from accidents occur."

Good ol' Pennsy Turnpike....this morning in the 6 o clock hr or close too, a conway freight truck with a pup trailer attached, flipped on the 476 south ramp from mid county tolls, Rob's towing outta bristol was on scene for the recovery. Lewis environmental also came out for the fuel spill recovery...

My question is, i heard some of the maintenance crews like plymouth and trevose talking on the "turnpike simplex" and what exactly is that?...what is simplex?

Simplex - nonrepeated single frequency. Can be base to base, mobile to mobile, or both. In this case it's PTC's channel 6, 159.0 MHz CTCSS 136.5. You'll hear it if you're close.

I saw the accident on my (newer) usual commute to MontCo. The TT was coming down the ramp from 476 onto 276 eastbound. There was moderate front end damage with the cab in the middle as the road. I don't know what the driver hit but the worst part for the driver would have been that the TT went over onto the driver's side. The trailer was twisted and a forward segment partly caved in. A heavy [wrecker] had to be called, as there wasn't much the 2 rollbacks on scene could do. The heavy was not on scene yet at about 0730 when I came by.
