The PSR 800 may be the next scanner I buy. I have tried one out and really like the record feature.

I haven't tried the record feature yet but the clarity and reception even with the ducky that comes with it is exceptionable. The ease of use is very nice (I was scanning the frequencies I wanted right out of the box.)
I got mine at NTF Communications in Calgary for $510.00 with the tax.

That's not bad. US discounters are asking $400 but you saved shipping and brokerage charges. Did the PSR 800 work right out of the box to handle the Red Deer trunked system? Or did you have to make some adjustments?

It handled all the trunked and conventional frequencies instantly, I just select from a list what I want to hear (it has the entire radioreference database built in) and it instantly starts scanning them.

My PSR-800 has been pretty good on the PPSTN and Regina City systems. It's super easy to program and use, but performance on the Aircraft VHF band is just atrocious - My 396XT pulls in signals that the PSR-800 can't seem to pick out at all.

I have had pretty good reception on the aircraft bands, it can be a bit fussy with the squelch knob

I've noticed that too.. With Global Attenuation on, I can pull the squelch way back and it will pickup the Regina airport okay. Without GA on, I have to have the squelch way up at the 12 or 2 o'clock position and the reception is not very impressive.

Might just be my particular spot, with this particular radio...

I'd still say the PSR-800 is a good "general use" scanner, I just think the 396XT (for me) is technically superior.

I have never thought about playing with the global Attenuator (Mostly cause I don't understand exactly what it is and how to use/adjust it.)
