There is some actual PD operation going on on 11696, digital mode. The odd thing is that the transmission from one of the officers is encrypted. The other officers seem to be able to hear him clearly. I don't know that much about P25 yet, but the encrypted mix took me by suprise.

Definitely Tulsa-based

It is definitely a Tulsa-based operation. Just heard somebody say they were travelling north across Admiral and are turning onto 244.

No Unit Designators

No unit designators are being used. They are only using first names. I tried to catch one when they went to teletype, but missed them. The voice sounded the same as one of the officers, but I missed his designator. Sounds like the person they are following is a really bad guy.

The TG is still showing as Digital Testing.

Dam, you guys are quick. I just started hearing this and came to post about it and Bingo it's already here. That is strange that one is encrypted and the other isn't.

Actually it's not that strange at all. It's impossible for the user to tell a difference in audio between a clear and encrypted digital transmission. If they aren't noticing a double blinking rx light or other indicator then they probably don't realize they have theirs turned off.

The radios will decode an encrypted transmission even in clear mode as long as they have the proper matching key.

OK, that makes sense. I figured that the person with the radio set encrypted didn't want his voice to be heard over the radio, i.e., he was an undercover officer involved in the operation.

Yes, now that I think about it, the encrypted radio signal is being passed through the tunk system in its encrypted form. Otherwise I wouldn't see it encrypted on the 396. I had assumed that the encryption setting would be a TG-specific setting within the trunk system, like the EMSA TG's. I wasn't aware that P25 allowed individual radios to be set to encrypted. I had assumed there would be licensing fees to Motorola for each encrypted TG. I know, too many assumptions. Time for me to study up on P25 in more detail.

Police 2 was also set up on the TG. Just before they shut down the operation, Police 2 had joined to assist.

I would be thinking about it but, since most of us are on a tight budget, I would wait. I made the mistake of going through a few digital radios only to be disatisfied with how much they cost and what kind features and performance etc. The fact still remains. Yes we are going digital REAL soon however, how much of that traffic is going to be encrypted like EMSA or TPD SID. Then you have wasted your money. Also one might take the rebanding issue into consideration. I personally have chosen to wait until both issues actually are happening and then act after that time.

Prob. a smart move on your part. I'm sure there are a few of us that will follow suit.

I just recently bought my 396. I'm VERY impressed with the unit. Just the ability to have 200 TGIDs per system, instead of the 100 per bank, has made a great deal of difference in what I'm hearing. It also has far fewer incorrect ID's displayed. My BC250D (w/o digital card) is terrible with false ID's, worse than my BC245. The 396 also does WX monitoring while monitoring systems, something else that the others can't do. That means I can monitor the TAEMA and SEM TG's, the non-trunked OEM freqs and WX, each with separate alarm tones and hold times, all at the same time while sleeping at night. It also does cross system-type acquisitions better than the other two, i.e., monitoring Tulsa and Broken Arrow at the same time. The 245 and 250 are terrible at it. The 396 is also much faster scanning, or at least that's my perception. The 396 had me ready to sell the three other scanners I have. Almost, but not quite. We may be waiting to see what happens with the Tulsa system, but there are definitely reasons to buy a 396 now.
