Adding CTCSS

Is there any sort of outboard unit to add CTCSS capabilities to a base or mobile? I've got a chance to get a great deal on a 2 meter mobile, but it lacks CTCSS, and pretty much all of the repeaters around here require a pl tone.

Yes - contact Communications Specialists, Inc and ask them about the model radio you have as they may have install instructions for it.

EDIT: Oh and they have ctcss encode only or they also have encode/decode units.

I particularly like the TS-64DS model.

There is some cheaper options for a PL Encoder module on eBay, and a few other companies sell some as well. If you just need the basic encode then no problem, that can be done for $20-$40 and a little work installing it. If you wanted full encode/decode than thats different and a bit more involved installation wise but still do-able.

Tell me one thing though, what is the make and model of the radio that your thinking of getting?? Would help in giving you more accurate advice.

You can get a brand new Yaesu FT-2800M, 60W and full encode and decode, for about $120.

The rig is a NDI HC-1400 on ebay. Not winning it isn't going to break my heart at all, but I am more interested in older units, partly due to limited funds, but mostly because they're easier to work on when something goes out. Modern PCB aren't so easy.
