• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've been curious about this for a bit.

Basically I have a small fleet of VX160s and VX417s laying about and naturally have a box of parts radios. Naturally, the 160s seem to share the VX180/190 circuit board, while the 417 shares the 420 circuit board.

My question was: Is it possible to add a DTMF and display to a 417 or a 160?

While many units I've worked with required some "tweaking", I've had a few others that have only required a new case, lcd, and keypad rubber to obtain DTMF/Display capabilities (interesting, especially considering the cost difference between some of these radios and their supposed upgrades)

Figure its only about $30 in parts per radio, but I'd rather see if anyone has experimented with this before I go off and buy anything.

It is possible to do just by recasing. The VX160 to a VX180 should be very forgiving in the software. The VX417 to the VX427 can be done, but you will need either Windows ME or XP (I don't remember which I used). I did it by mistake to a VX427 when they first came out. I ended up with no keypad or display. I played around and got a VX417 to function as a VX427.

On a side note, the VX4100 8 channel can be made in to a 501 channel just by ordering a new front panel. They use to be ~$30. Install it, read it and you have a VX4200 with a VX4100 serial #.
