I live about7 miles from Stewart Airport in upstate NY. I have an ADS-B receiver that is part of Planeplotter. I don't seem to be picking up any of the aircraft that are coming in and out of that airport They pass right over my house on take off. I hear them on the NY Center frequency, but have not even picked up one on ADS-B. I could understand if I got one occasionally, but I have never even seen one!
Can anyone explain why this is so? Driving me nuts!!!

ADS-B is voluntary in the US until 2020; you won't see the majority of air traffic in the US equipped with it for a few years, but the good news is that the amount of planes with it will increase.

I generally see 10 or so aircraft during the daytime within 200miles on my ADS-B setup right now, once the weather improves so will the antenna locaiton, I'm expecting to push that to 300miles.

What receiver do you have? You should at least be picking up the Mode-S

You should at least be tracking one all the time, and have about 10 on Mode-S. Is your antenna plugged into the correct port, is it vertical and not horizontal, is it by a window (if inside)? A external antenna would really help with some good feedline if you don't have one already. I track aircraft 45+ miles.

Did you forget to press the green record button in Plane Plotter?? Beware you have to have your Base Station/Airnav software UP, and RUNNING! :)

Sorry for the 20 questions!

I receive a lot of aircraft, sometimes 40+ with an outside mounted vertical gain antenna. I just don't see any planes going in and going out of Stewart Airport. There is a lot of UPS and DHL traffic at that airport, but not to much passenger traffic. I am using Basestation SBS-1 with the Kinetics receiver.

lshmole, I think what you're experiencing is reality for the ADS-B implementation in the US just as the other posters indicated. At my metro area airport almost none of the major carriers report ADS-B. The only plane I ever see land and take off using ADS-B is a daily FedEx flight. There are AA, Delta, United, and the smaller connector airlines going in and out all day. I see them using MODE-S only, but no position reporting using ADS-B.

Now, just in general, my experience has been the major airlines that do report ADS-B only do so on international flights with heavy or large aircraft like the 747 or 777. If you know those classes of craft are in the area landing and taking off but not reporting then something else may be wrong.

Agreed. Unless you live near KATL, KMIA, KJFK, or any other airport with a variety of international flights, chances are you will see very little ADS-B activity. I do notice quite a bit of Airtran ("CITRUS" TRS) flights use ADS-B.

May be a dumb question, but what is Mode S and how can I tell if I am receiving it?

Mode S does not provide a location. It only provides altitude and registration #

Example, on planeplotter I may be receiving 10 aircraft at once, but only one is providing location information (ADSB)

I don't know how your program lists aircraft it's receiving so I can't explain to you how to tell which is which
