AES Serial number?

The last two apx next's I ordered I forgot to order AES. I got ahold of my Motorola rep and she said that I need the serial number for my keyloader in order to add aes QA06653. I, a) don't have one yet and, b) don't even know if it'll be motorola.

Has anyone else run into this?

Yes, that's how you add algos into an APX. An algo upgrade file will be sent to you and you put that into the KVL. The KVL verifies that it is the intended recipient, unpacks the upgrade file, and then you can add the algos to each APX.

Make sure you double check the serial when you submit it. Coworker of mine was 1 digit off when he sent it to Moto and it became this big thing.

I'm going to assume that you want to get the AES algo into these radios ASAP so they can be programmed with outside agency keys? Otherwise you'll just have to wait until you get a keyloader, since presumably you're not loading AES keys into them at this point since you don't even have a KVL yet.

Correct. We have it in our other radio's that way when the county goes big E all they have to do is come out and load the keys

Yes, that's how it works and MSI no longer supports MACE upgrades with a KVL3000+ or a KVL4000. It has to be a KVL5000 or KVL7000.

Pretty sure when I had my NEXT's I loaded keys with my KFDTool (original version).

KFDtool the software (and associated variety of physical adapters) implements the TIA-102.AACD standard keyloading protocol. As long as Motorola continues to follow the standard (there is no indication they plan to not), you can keyload with it.

They don't care what the serial number of the keyloader is for the purpose of loading keys. However, it does matter if you want to use the KVL to load an algorithm. That is how you "field upgrade" a radio for a particular algorithm, you use the KVL.

As has been already said, the supported method to add algorithms to radios (initiate the MACE) to APX radios in the field is to use a currently supported Motorola KVL to push the initialization. This is Motorola specific, thus must use a Motorola KFD.

Key filling the radio, can be done with any standards based KFD.

Option two, if you don't have a KVL5000 or KVL7000 today you can send the radios to Motorola. It's not quick...but in this case probably quicker than ordering a KVL7000.

Exactly right. I asked the same question last time I ordered some APX algo upgrades to shoot with a KVL5000; it's apparently a security feature, required by the Feds (I never got a straight answer when I asked about that).

And lots cheaper. I almost had a heart attack when they told me the price of a KVL5000 with all the algos I would need; I can only imagine the price of a KVL7000 these days.

Everything you are questioning is your dealer's problem, not yours. They don't need the serial of your keyloader, the dealer would give them theirs and handle the upgrade for you. None of this but paying the bill is anything for you to worry about.

Also you plan on using KFDtool for your public safety radio?

Meh guys, every vendor has different approaches to how they operate, none of them is perfect.

just another reason people love the Harris radios.

Too bad Harris radios are significantly less secure (FIPS 140 level 1) than the MACE (FIPS 140 level 2 or 3).

On the XL line it’s built in, just have to set a passcode.
