Aircraft monitoring

Can anyone help me with monitoring aircraft. How do you do it without using RATSHACKS preprogrammed freqs? I pick up some chatter using these but miss a whole lot more than I recieve. Sorry for sounding like an idiot, but hey I guess we all are at one point or another.

try airnav.com click on browse by state a list of airports should come up then click on the airport you want info including frequencys should appear

That site should help you with freqs... You'll also want to find the Center freqs for your area, which will give you the high transiting AC. Keep in mind that the ground portion of the transmissions will oftentimes not be heard. You have to be fairly close to the ground transmitter to hear the tower, ground control, ATC, and so on.
