Emergency services communications network is also to freeze salary reviews until September 2009, staff in negotiation with union for possible voluntary redundancies
Emergency services communications network Airwave has announced it is to make 10 per cent of its workforce redundant and will freeze salary reviews until September 2009.
It is also understood that Airwave intends to close its sites at Adastral Park in Suffolk and Leeds over the next few months.
It is expected that around 95 jobs will be cut. A formal consultation process has been established and union Connect is involved.
Airwave, which was sold by Telefonica to Australian investment firm Macquarie in 2007, said the decision to cut staff was related to the business’s current performance and the need to establish cost savings.
Connect national officer with responsibility for Airwave Sarah Ward said: "Talks with Airwave will allow us an opportunity to explore the rationale further, talk through the processes to be used and discuss redundancy terms.
"We have emphasised the importance of a voluntary approach and have pressed this point to Airwave.
"We have also pointed out that asking for expressions of interest over the next five days provides individuals with an extremely tight time-scale in which to make important decisions about their lives. Furthermore, without details of terms it can be difficult for people to consider
their options.
"We will continue to press this point to Airwave; meanwhile the company has a indicated a willingness to look sympathetically at requests from people genuinely unable to respond in the current timescale."
